GRACE “GRACIA”
ROBERTA BENNISH,
74, of Baltimore, Md.,
and Tarpon Springs,
Fla., died Aug. 1, 2018.
A student in the
Detroit Public Schools,
she graduated from
Bennish
the art program at
Mumford High School
and received her bach-
elor’s in fine arts from
Wayne State University. Her Jewish edu-
cation was at Workmen’s Circle.
Grace’s passions in life were her art
and bringing joy to others with the
beauty she created. Her talent was rec-
ognized early. As a high school senior
at Mumford, she won the National
Scholastic Gold Medal in Art, which
was presented to her by Gov. Nelson
Rockefeller at the Museum of Modern
Art in New York. This was accompanied
by a college scholarship and the incor-
poration of the winning artwork in a
museum collection in New York.
Grace’s oeuvre ranged from prints to
watercolors to photography. She was
especially proud of her pastel rendi-
tions of the many parrots in her menag-
erie, which were exhibited widely and
published in book form.
In more recent years, Grace devel-
oped a deep commitment to human
rights and animal welfare, serving as
the president of United for Human
Rights in Florida.
Mrs. Bennish is survived by her
husband of 30 years, Garry Roberts;
her brothers and sisters-in-law, Aaron
and Nechama Bennish, Michael and
Marie-Christine Bennish, and Joseph
and Harriet Bennish; many loving
nieces, nephews, friends and colleagues
throughout the world, whose lives she
enriched in many ways.

MARILYN FOSTER

Detroiter, passed away

loving family around
her in Texas.
She is survived

and numerous other family and friends.
Mrs. Dombchik was preceded in
death by her loving husband, Jerry
Dombchik; her parents, Samuel and
Anne Foster; and her brother, Melvin
Foster.

HELEN SNIDERMAN
GARELICK, 101, for-
merly of Detroit,
passed away July 31,
2018, in Phoenix, Ariz.
She was born in
Baltimore, Md., on
Sept. 20, 1916, but
Garelick
grew up in Detroit and
attended Northern
High School (1933),
and Wayne State
University (B.A. in special education,
1964).
She taught children with special
needs in Detroit before moving to
Arizona in 1975 with her husband,
Robert Garelick, a noted art dealer in
Detroit and Arizona. She loved working
with children and she loved to travel; in
her retirement, she and Robert made
numerous trips around the world.
Shortly after Robert died in 2008, she
moved into the Kivel Manor Assisted
Living Center in Phoenix, where she
remained until her death, just short of
turning 102.
Mrs. Garelick was devoted to family
and was happiest when surrounded
by relatives and friends at numer-
ous social gatherings in Detroit and
Arizona. She was loved by many and
known by all for her kindness, humor,
intelligence and humility.
She is survived by three children, four
grandchildren and two great-grandchil-
dren.
There will be a Celebration of Life
ceremony on Sept. 21, 2018, at Kivel
Manor in Phoenix. To send cards or

kivelcare.org). Her ashes will be stored
next to her husband’s at the National
Memorial Cemetery Columbarium out-
side of Phoenix. May her memory be a
blessing.
