The Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic Studies at Wayne
State University announced that Sophia Gawel (Frankel
Jewish Academy), Lily Kollin (North Farmington High
School) and David A. Keyes (Mesivta High School) are the
winners of the 2017-2018 Jewish Writing Competition.
This competition, now in its third year, invites high
school students across Metro Detroit area to submit
an essay or poetry on any Jewish related topic. The
goal, Center Director Howard Lupovitch explained at
an awards ceremony held on campus last week, is “to
encourage burgeoning young Jewish intellectuals to think
and write not only reflectively but also critically — an
especially important skill at a time when 140 characters
passes for complete thought.”
Gawel’s essay, “It’s Unorthodox to Wear Tefillin,”
explored the ways that morning prayer and wearing tefil-
lin impacted her connection to Judaism and its relation-
ship between gender and tradition.
Kollin’s poem, “I am a Jew,” expresses how being Jewish
guides her in her everyday life and the courage it gives her
to speak out when encountered with uncomfortable situ-
ations.
Keyes’ essay, “Jewish Light on Immigration,” explores
the relationship and similarities between Dreamers
and DACA, and Jewish immigration going back to the
19th and early 20th centuries.
Gawel and Kollin will receive $500 for first place, and
Keyes will receive $100 as the Honorable Mention from
the Cohn-Haddow Center and will have their essays pub-
lished in the anthology series, Voices, which features writ-
ings authored by high school students. Their essays are
available online at judaicstudies.wayne.edu/2018-winners.
