These were all facets of David “Dave” Dombey, described by a friend as “the kindest, warmest and nicest guy you’d ever want to meet.” Together with his late wife, Fayga, the Dombeys David Dombey were among the found- ers in 1964 of Yeshivat Akiva, now Farber Hebrew Day School in Southfield. They also helped launch Young Israel of Oak-Woods, a Modern Orthodox congregation that merged with Young Israel of Greenfield to form today’s Young Israel of Oak Park. Dave Dombey, 94, of Oak Park died on June 24, 2018. His funeral and inter- ment took place in Israel. An evening to honor the memory of the Dombeys will begin at 8 p.m. Thursday, July 5, at Young Israel of Southfield. He was born to Detroit-based Zionists Miriam and Maurice “Moishe” Dombey on March 9, 1924. Moishe, an insurance salesman, had an ongoing Yiddish comedy routine, “Mr. Chizik,” on the radio. Dave graduated from Central High School and Wayne State University with a BS in eduation and New York University with a MA in education. He met Fayga Herman of New York on the beach in Miami Beach in December 1947. His future wife was vacationing with her parents. The cou- ple’s mostly long-distance romance cul- minated in marriage on Nov. 20, 1948, in New York. Unable to find a teaching job, Dave brought Fayga and year-old daughter Sharon to Detroit. During Dave’s subsequent career with Detroit Public Schools, he was a school administrator and teacher. Photography was his “side job.” Dave Dombey Associates and Dombey- Abrin Associates photographed wed- dings, bar/bat mitzvahs and commu- nal events for more than 50 years. Dave wrote about photography in Danny Raskin’s JN column (Feb. 12, 2009): “After receiving my first camera upon graduation from Durfee Junior High School, I’d go Downtown to the Fox and Michigan theaters, photograph the stage show, hurry home to process the photos and return backstage to have the photos autographed.” He initially volunteered his services to fundraising dinners. Celebrities he photographed included President Ronald Reagan, Sen. Ted Kennedy, Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Jackie Mason, Itzhak Perlman and Barbara Stanwyck. Dave was proud of seeing the final games when the Detroit Tigers won the World Series at home in 1934, 1935 and 1984. He watched Israel’s first baseball game in 1987. Dave also co-chaired a Detroit group that sponsored the Nemarim (Tigers) team of Kfar Shmaryahu in the Israel Association of Baseball. The Dombeys’ visits to Israel increased after their two younger chil- dren made aliyah. “His kids and grandkids adored him,” said Doris Werner, Dave’s sister. “Dad loved doing card tricks and tricks with coins,” Sharon Baseman noted. “He was good with little kids.” David Dombey was father and father-in-law of Sharon and David Baseman, Lynn and Rabbi Jason Meyers, and Miriam Dombey; brother of Doris Werner; brother-in-law of Judith Turner. He had 13 grandchil- dren, numerous great-grandchildren and other family members. Husband of the late Fayga, Dave was father of the late Rabbi Moshe Chaim Dombey; brother-in-law of the late Manfred Werner, the late Judge Jerome Turner and the late Dave Herman. Interment took place at Eretz Hachaim Cemetery in Beit Shemesh, Israel.
