DOROTHY LEIBICK
BRODER, 92, of
Southfield, died June
19, 2018.
She was an
American watercolor-
ist, draughtsman and
sculptor.
Broder
Born in 1925 in
c. 1982
Manhattan to Eastern
European Jewish
emigrees, she was raised in Brooklyn.
The family relocated to Detroit when
Dorothy was 12 years old. She began
drawing at that time and later pre-
vailed on her parents to send her to
Cass Technical High School in Detroit,
where she studied art. She focused on
charcoal figures and still-life water-
color. While at Cass Tech, Dorothy
worked in her father’s photography
studio, hand-painting black and white
portraits in heavy oils, simulating
color photography.
After high school, Dorothy worked
for Army ordinance at the General
Motors plant, drafting submarines
during World War II. Though a full-
time wife and mother from the late-
1940s, Dorothy continued to draw
and paint. She held art classes in her
suburban basement and began devel-
oping her passion and skill in fluid
watercolor.
In 1959, she entered Wayne State
University’s College of Art, studying
part time while raising her family.
She completed her bachelor of fine
arts degree and obtained her teaching
certificate in 1966, going on to get a
master’s degree in 1970. For 22 years,
Dorothy taught drawing, painting,
sculpture, photography and art history
at Oak Park High School.
A popular and much-loved teacher,
she encouraged individual artistic
expression. Many of her students
became close personal friends as well
as notable artists, photographers and
collectors.
Throughout the years, Dorothy
produced hundreds of paintings and
drawings in her Farmington Hills
studio overlooking the Rouge River
ravine. Passionate and excited by visu-
al beauty and visual drama, she lived
her life as an artist and loving mother,
surrounded by her art, the artwork
of her friends and the art books she
cherished.
