JAMES MICHAEL WEISBERG, 80, died peacefully at his home in Grand Blanc on Sunday, June 3, 2018, surrounded by family. He was born on Feb. 17, 1938, to Gladys Weisberg (Krause) and Morrey Weisberg. He gradu- ated from Detroit’s Mumford High School. After his two years in the United States Navy, he moved to Flint and met (Barbara) Bobbi Shapiro. They were married March 26, 1961. They were married for almost 44 years when Bobbi died in 2004, at the age of 63. He never remarried. He claimed that it took Bobbi all of 43 years to train him, and he wasn’t sure he could be or wanted to be retrained. Mr. Weisberg, along with Kevin Dillon and Tom Ogle, began D.O.W. Asphalt Paving in 1981 and were immediately successful. He sold the business to employees after Bobbi died, and he retired. During long hot summers, you could find Jimmy either working until dark or on the golf course, where he was an excellent golfer. It was his lifelong love. He gained the name “Uncle Who” because of skipping many a family get- together; he was golfing. Jimmy collected friends. Once he befriended someone, he worked hard to keep him in his life. The friends that he collected during his annual month stay in Aruba called him the “Mayor” because he knew everyone. His neighbors in Grand Blanc also called him the “Mayor,” and they claim that none of them knew each other until he moved in. Jimmy also was that rare thing: a Jewish optimist. He never had a bad day or never let you know it if he did. His glass was always half full (unless it was vodka, and then you’d better top it off and don’t forget the six olives because he doesn’t like to drink on an empty stomach). His clouds always had silver linings. Even going through his last terrible illness, he never, ever let it get the best of him. When calling and asking how he was, a friend might hear, “Great! Played 18 today and shot 3 under par!” or “The dancing girls just left, so I’m a bit tired.” He never complained, and he kept his “twisted” sense of humor until the end. Mr. Weisberg leaves two chil- dren, Melissa Weisberg and Michael Weisberg; two daughters-in-law, Lisa Lewis and Nova Jennings; grandchil- dren, Lewis Campbell, Gavin Miles and Preston Weisberg; his favorite cousin, Fern (Bert) Edelstein; broth- ers-in-law, Larry Feinstein and Eddie Shapiro; many nieces and nephews; many, many, many devoted friends. He was predeceased by his wife, Bobbi; mother, Gladys; father, Morrey; sister, Sharon Scarpone; and son, Lawrence Jay. Services were at Sharp Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Flint. Interment was at Machpelah Cemetery in Flint.
