Working For Victims Former Detroiter combats child sexual abuse in the Orthodox community. BARBARA LEWIS CONTRIBUTING WRITER S hana Bell Aaronson, who grew up in Oak Park and moved to Israel at age 12, has been named one of “70 Extraordinary Women of Israel” by Miriam Lottner, a Times of Israel blogger. For the past three years, in celebra- tion of Israel’s Independence Day, Lottner has been writing about high- achieving women who came from elsewhere to make Israel their home. She honored 68 women in 2016; 69 last year and 70 this year, Israel’s 70th birthday. Aaronson, 30, is chief operating officer of Jewish Community Watch, an organization dedicated to com- bating child sexual abuse within Orthodox communities in the United States and Israel. “She has taken the lead on hun- dreds of cases, working with the police, courts, private investigators and mental health services on behalf of victims from communities all over the country,” Lottner wrote in her April 19 blog. Aaronson attended Yeshivas Darchei Torah in Southfield, where her mother, Lisa Bell, taught for many years before the family moved to Israel in 2000. Aaronson is married to Dovid Aaronson, formerly of Baltimore, and has sons age 8 and 9 and a 5-year- old daughter. She lives in Ramat Bet Shemesh, as do her father, Jeffrey Bell, and her mother, who has remarried and uses the name Leeba Rosenthal. Aaronson is the granddaughter of Cherna and Eugene Kowalsky of Southfield and Gloria Bell of Tamarac, Fla., formerly of Oak Park.
