Detroit, home to 1,300 urban farms, is the only UNESCO City of Design in the United States. Sukkah x Detroit honors both, Raines said. The weeklong celebration will take place Sept. 23-30 as part of Detroit’s Month of Design. Throughout the week, five to seven sukkahs, selected through an international design competition, will be on display in Detroit’s historic Capitol Park, accom- panied by complementary programs and events to be announced such as farmers markets and pop-up dinners featuring local growers and chefs, educational events and lectures. The Design Competition is open to all: architects, artists, mak- ers, builders, design professionals and others. No professional qualification is required. Design proposals can be developed individually or by teams. Winning teams will be connected with a licensed engineer for certification and receive a $10,000 materials/construc- tion budget and $5,000 design stipend. Submissions will be exhibited at the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue and Eastern Market After Dark. Related programming is being devel- oped and information on that will be forthcoming later this summer, Raines said. The competition will “showcase the creativity and collaborative nature of the Downtown Synagogue,” she said. For more information, visit downtownsynagogue.org/ sukkah-x-detroit. •
