Segal’s dream in 1958 to start a local Jewish day school was celebrated May 6, when Hillel Day School of Metropolitan Detroit held its 60th anniversary gala at the Farmington Hills school. More than 600 supporters attended the event, which honored Brian Hermelin with the Dream Maker Award and the school’s six most veteran teachers, each dedicating more than 25 years to the school, with the Rabbi Jacob E. Segal z”l Award. The evening also recognized distinguished alumni award recipients, businessman Mark Schostak (class of 1977) and retail entrepreneur Rachel Lutz (class of 1994), and featured a performance by Michael HarPaz (class of 1987). “We are so proud to be here. When we became teachers none of us could foresee standing here,” said Adina Levin, who has taught Judaic Studies for 32 years. In accepting the Segal award on behalf of the group, she said, “We thank our students’ families for the choice and sacrifice they make to send their children to Jewish day school, for it is more important than ever to have a component of religious, ethical guidance. We teach our students to be thankful and to appreciate, and today we thank our own families, this school and the souls who enter its doors each day.” • MEMORY CARE Eli and Michele Saulson with honoree Rachel Lutz C EDARBROO K Honoree Brian Hermelin with his wife, Jennifer, and children Isabel and David SENIOR LIVING BLOOMFIELD HILLS Now Offering!
