Scaffolding, written and directed by Matan Yair, about
a troubled Israeli teenager (Asher Lax) torn between
two role models, one of them his working-class
father (screened June 2 at the Michigan Theater
and June 6 at the State Theatre); Love, Gilda,
a documentary directed by Lisa D’Apolito
that shows the side of Detroit-native Gilda
Radner that struggled with success, fame,
relationships and a battle with ovarian cancer,
and features interviews with Amy Poehler,
Cecily Strong and Lorne Michaels (screened
June 10 at the DFT at the DIA); and filmmaker
Alan Rudolph (who mentored under Robert
Altman) is celebrated with panels, screenings

THROUGH JUNE 17: Casa Valentina

JET Theatre makes a grand exit from its longtime
home at the Aaron DeRoy Theatre with its last
production at that location in the West Bloomfield
JCC. Set in New York’s Catskills in 1962, Casa
Valentina tells of the resort’s guests, often-mar-
ried cross-dressing men escaping the repressive
world of the times for a weekend in private to live
as women. The fictionalized Tony-nominated play
by Harvey Fierstein is based on real-life Casa Susanna, a Pennsylvania resort owned by Tito Valenti,
also a regular columnist for the magazine Transvestia, where he wrote: “Let us, for heaven’s sake, strive
to forge a nice, clean-cut, real person out of ‘the girl within.’ Let’s give her a personality of her own.”
