Senate Resolution 154, sponsored by Sen. Arlan Meekhof, and House Resolution 308, sponsored by Rep. Robert Wittenberg, passed with bipartisan support. The resolutions celebrate Israel’s landmark anniver- sary and reaffirm the many vibrant ties that link Michigan and Israel. “On behalf of the Detroit Jewish Federation, I would like to express our gratitude to Sen. Meekhof and Rep. Wittenberg, and all of the co- sponsors from the Michigan Senate and House, for their recognition of this historic occasion,” said Beverly Liss, Federation president. “We’re extremely proud of the strong, sup- portive bond between Israel and the state of Michigan, and we deeply appreciate our lawmakers’ ongoing commitment to this relationship.” Alicia Chandler, president of the Jewish Community Relations Council/AJC, remarked, “Israel’s 70th anniversary is a time to pause and reflect on the miracle that is the modern state of Israel. What was just a dream for millennia is now a complex, vibrant, thriving democ- racy that brings innovation and technology to the world. Each year is an opportunity to celebrate plural- istic and democratic values toward which Israel continues to strive.” The Metro Detroit Jewish com- munity will honor this milestone anniversary for Israel through a year-long Israel@70 campaign. In the coming months, there will be at least 70 programs honoring the occasion, ranging from small gath- erings to major community-wide events. • Busch’s Food Drive Busch’s Fresh Food Market will part- ner with local food banks to help reduce child hunger with the annual All aBout Children Food Drive, a community-based fundraiser, where donations will remain within the walls of local neighborhoods. The drive will run Monday, May 7, through Wednesday, May 16, at all Busch’s locations. “We’re ecstatic that the generos- ity of our guests helps provide food for our children and families.” said Doug Busch, community develop- ment director. “This has allowed us to raise over $3 million in cash and food donations since 2009.” Guests will have the opportunity to donate five different ways, which include $5 toward produce, $10 in bakery, recycling slips, any cash amount or a $10 ready-to-go bag. Busch’s will also be hosting a Grill Fest at all locations, 11:30 a.m.-6 p.m., Friday, May 11, through Sunday, May 13, in which a portion of sales will be donated directly to the food drive. J.B.’s Smokehouse, located inside the Canton store, will also be sup- porting the food drive with a spe- cialty menu. “Many children rely on schools or other day programs to get the food they need,” Busch said. “This is our chance to deliver fresh, nutritious food for our children to eat during the summer months.” •
