jews d & in the faces places From customized straps that lighten your backpack load to an eyelash curler that applies mascara, Hillel Day School sixth-grade students wowed local judges with their powers of persuasion as they pitched innovative products at their version of Shark Tank on Wednesday, March 7. Inspired by the hit ABC television show, this annual Hillel project-based learning unit involves research, writing, economics, innovation and technology, in the service of bringing a new product to market. “Our driving question is how to create a product or service that is demanded by consumers and improves the quality of life,” said Emily Sherbin, a language arts teacher. “We use a foundation of economics and the design process to guide students toward answering this question by developing a product. Throughout, students are prototyping in our Maker Space, writing speeches for their product pitches and practicing public speaking skills.” The hard work paid off. “The energy of the kids was remarkable,” said Jimmy Farber, a director of Lipari Food Products, a wholesale food distributor, who was one of the “sharks” who peppered students with questions about manufacturing and marketing before deciding to invest in or pass on a start-up. “For their age, they’re really confident,” Farber said. “I listen to product pitches every day, and half of it is enthusiasm. I’m impressed!” • FREE Kosher Lunch Pita Post * C K!
