A migraine headache consists of a throbbing or pounding head pain with sensitivity to bright lights, sounds and/or odors. Patients may become nauseated, or even vomit. The pain can become debilitating and interfere with a person’s ability to function. There are several factors that may lead to the development of migraine headaches. Migraines can be a hereditary condition, occur after a head trauma, concussion, or be triggered by lifestyle choices such as diet. The development of a migraine involves inflammatory changes around blood vessels as well as changes in neurotransmitter activity. The changes in the brain that occur during a migraine may also affect other body functions such as sleep and mood, leading to symptoms of anxiety, depression or insomnia. When headaches are impacting a person’s ability to perform activities of daily living, patients should seek treatment from a physician. My goal is to develop an effective treatment plan for patients so that headaches are not preventing them from missing out on their lives. jn March 29 • 2018 89
