Traditional Mexican Flavor
Find it at Mojito
Rio Grande.
Mary Meldrum
T
here is a new full-bar Mexican restaurant
that opened on Northwestern Highway near
Inkster in a small strip mall area. Situated at
29852 Northwestern Highway, where Farmington Hills
and Southfield converge, Mojito Rio Grande opened
last November. This 92-seat bar and restaurant is
attracting Mexican food enthusiasts for lunch and
dinner with its authentic offerings.
You can park right outside the door and walk into
a warm and inviting atmosphere. The bar area to the
right has generous seating as well as high-top tables.
It also opens up to a patio once the warm weather
season arrives.
The restaurant area to the left offers large booths as
well as table seating.
General manager and executive chef for 30 years
Nico Moraitis greets customers, helps out behind the
bar and oversees the kitchen. Owner Andy Stylianou
is also the owner of Big Tommy’s Parthenon on Grand
River Road, and he applies the same fresh, high-
quality ingredients and attention to detail at Mojito
Rio Grande.
Primary ingredients, such as the salsa, guacamole,
soups and pico de gallo, are all made fresh daily. The
chips are light, crispy and corny and, like many ingre-
dients, are shipped from Mexicantown in Detroit.
The tacos are very traditional, and the corn shells
have two tortillas for each taco. Nothing is going to
fall apart here. Not just hot, but aromatic spices are
part of Chef Moraitis’ recipes. The street tacos and
other dishes come with several sauces that profile
these interesting flavors.
