The 19th Annual World Sabbath took place on March 11 at Christ Church
Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills. Its mission to teach Metro Detroit’s diverse
population that building a community of justice, equality, respect and peace
is a calling we all share — no matter what our faith tradition might be. Most
importantly, we are impacting our children, teens and young adults.
The processional included children of many faith traditions, proudly
waving peace banners they decorated themselves and singing “We Are
Children of Peace.”
Imam Mohamed Almasmari was honored with the World Sabbath
Peace Award for bringing Jews, Christians and Muslims together at the
Muslim Unity Center in Bloomfield Hills.
The event began with Abraham Miller from Temple Beth El blowing the
shofar, Ehsun Karimi from the Islamic House of Wisdom chanting the
Muslim Call to Prayer and Vishal Kumar Chandu blowing the conch shell,
a Hindu tradition. Prayers were also given in the Sikh and Zoroastrian
traditions. The interfaith service featured youth choirs from Christ Church
Cranbrook, the Baha’i Community, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints and Temple Beth El, as well as Hindu drummers and Jain dancers. •

Some of the clergy attending: The Rev. Robyn Moore, Hartford Memorial Baptist Church; Rabbi
Mark Miller, Temple Beth El; Imam Mohamed Almasmari, the Muslim Unity Center; Imam
Mohammed Elahi, the Islamic House of Wisdom; and Imam Arif Huskic, Hamtramck.

The Temple Beth El Youth Choir rocked the
house with the song “Not By Might, Not by
Power” by Debbie Friedman under the direc-
tion of Samantha Jahr.

The Jain dancers display traits we should
be focusing on — honesty, kindness, non-
violence and charity.
