Addiction
Can Be
Overcome

With Help of
Dedicated
Local Doctor

By Judy Greenwald

BY JERRY ZOLYNSKY

D

ealing with addiction is one of the most dif-
ficult challenges anyone can face.
But with professional care under the
direction of a doctor like Eric Coffman, hope
for recovery is an attainable goal.
Dr. Coffman, D.O., who with wife, Dana, has lived
in Bloomfield Township for more than 20 years, is a
1977 graduate of the Des Moines University College of
Osteopathic Medicine and is president of Addiction
Medicine Consultants in Farmington Hills. He is also
affiliated with Beaumont Hospital-Farmington Hills
and Garden City Hospital. He is a medical co-director
of St. Mary Mercy Hospital’s Chemical Dependency
Unit and, for the past 10 years, has been voted a Top
Doctor in Addiction Medicine by Hour magazine.
Certified by the American Osteopathic Board in
general and family practice, and in addiction medi-
cine by the American Board of Addiction Medicine, he
specializes in the treatment of impaired professionals,
such as CEOs, business executives, doctors, lawyers,
politicians, celebrities, law-enforcement personnel and
pilots. With over 35 years’ experience in combating
addiction in patients of all ages and backgrounds, Dr.
Coffman offers an approach of understanding when
treating this illness.
“In addiction and alcohol treatment, I embrace the
energy of tiferet, which finds the balance of love and
discipline, kindness and strength,” Dr. Coffman said.
“Addiction affects the entire family in addition to the
one afflicted. By treating the addict, the whole family
is treated, and made healthier.”
As an addiction medicine specialist, Dr. Coffman
explained he uses his experience to not only deal with
the underlying issues of drug or alcohol abuse, but also
to treat the diseases that stem from addiction, such as
mood and mental health disorders and liver and other
organ damage.
“I’ve treated tens of thousands of patients with
addictive disease and associated mental health condi-
tions, as well as chemically dependent chronic pain
patients who became dependent because of medical
conditions,” he noted. “I employ the concierge concept,
which emphasizes customized individual treatment so
the patient has increased access to the doctors. This
promotes more personalized care, allowing patients
to get medical detoxification and relapse prevention
treatment with minimal disruption to their daily life
and responsibilities.”

Dr. Coffman emphasized that in addition to con-
cierge services, he continues to offer traditional medi-
cal treatment methods in helping patients overcome
addiction.
Much like rehabilitation centers across the coun-
try, Dr. Coffman’s Metro Detroit practice offers an
approximately yearlong program to help impaired
professionals and others break their reliance on harm-
ful substances. He noted that when those seeking help
comply with the treatment, his program’s success rate
is in line with those of the out-of-town centers.
“It’s important for professional people to know they
can get help locally, without having to go away to a
rehabilitation facility,” Dr. Coffman emphasized. “In
many cases, treatment can even be provided on an
outpatient basis.”
Dr. Coffman said that consistent with the most
advanced approaches in addiction medicine, he
orchestrates his medical program with experienced
substance abuse therapists and recovery coaches to
provide customized, comprehensive treatment, and
offers guidance to the affected family on how to best
manage the relationship with the addict and his or her
disease.
His wife agreed with the importance of involv-
ing family when dealing with addiction. “People feel
despondent when dealing with a family member with

an addiction,” she said. “They need to know there are
doctors like Eric who can help them.”
“I really believe people deserve to regain the respect
and dignity they lose because of the progressive dete-
rioration of their self-esteem and the social stigma
associated with their addiction,” Dr. Coffman added.
“Of the many serious diseases we face, addiction is
the one with the greatest likelihood of successful treat-
ment. By following the prescribed program, people can
overcome their dependency and return to their normal
lives.
“I get real personal satisfaction from every patient
who recovers and from knowing that families in this
situation can get their family member back.”
Anyone who is suffering or has a friend or family
member in need of treatment is encouraged to contact
Addiction Medicine Consultants for a confidential
consultation. Y
