r. Samuel Adler, one of
America’s foremost compos-
ers, conductors, authors and
pedagogues, will be the scholar-in-
residence at Temple Beth Emeth
in Ann Arbor, where they will be
celebrating Dr. Adler’s 90th birthday,
joining similar events this year all
over the world.

and the Kol HaLev Choir participat-
ing as well. Adler will address “My
Journey Through Life with Jewish
Music.” All are welcome.
Adler is the composer of more
than 400 published works in a wide
variety of mediums, including six
symphonies, five operas, string
quartets, solo works for almost
every instrument in the orchestra,
plus many choral compositions. He
is also well known for his Jewish
liturgical music. A member of the
American Academy of Arts and
Letters, he is the recipient of many
honors and holds four honorary
doctorates.
In addition to a wealth of scores,
Adler published three textbooks. His
autobiography, Building Bridges with
Music, was recently published (2017)
and there will be a book signing dur-
ing the weekend in Ann Arbor.
On Shabbat morning, April 7,
Adler will lead Torah study at 8:30-
9:45 a.m. Saturday evening from
6:15-7 there will be a wine and
cheese reception for advance ticket
holders, followed by a 45-minute
pre-concert talk about Adler’s auto-
biography. The concert begins at 8
p.m. with the Havdalah Suite sung
by the Kol HaLev Choir, under the
direction of Cantor Regina Lambert-
Hayut with a solo by Cantor Rachel
Gottlieb Kalmowitz of Temple Beth
El in Bloomfield Township. The rest
of the program will consist of Adler’s
secular compositions, featuring
Freda Herseth, soprano, and Ray
McLellan on piano and organ, both
graduate students from the U-M
School of Music, Theater and Dance.
A reception will follow. Tickets are
$18; $10 for students. They can be
purchased in advance at

also be sold at the door. •
