MARCH 23-25: Voices Of Light

In 1431, an illiterate 19-year-old girl led the French army
against English occupation and was subsequently captured,
burned at the stake then martyred. In 1928, Danish director
Carl Theodor Dreyer told her story in the silent masterpiece
The Passion of Joan of Arc. (Jean Cocteau said it “seemed
like an historical document from an era in which the cinema
didn’t exist.”) In 1988, composer Richard Einhorn saw it
and was blown away. Next week, Detroit audiences can
celebrate Women’s History Month by taking in the DIA’s
Detroit Film Theatre’s screening of the film accompanied by
the Rachkam Choir and Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings
performing Einhorn’s Voices of Light, a musical score for choir, soloists (including four female soloists
performing together as the voice of Joan) and orchestra, with a libretto that is a montage of Latin and ancient
French writings) composed to accompany the film. $25/$10-$20 students. DFT. (313) 833-4005; dia.org.
