Yad Ezra Announces Purim
Pasta Shake-Up 2018

Yad Ezra is encouraging synagogues,
schools and organizations who offer
a megillah reading for Purim to ask
attendees to bring boxes of pasta to
shake as a gragger each time Haman’s
name is mentioned during the service.
After the holiday, the pasta will be
donated to Yad Ezra for distribution to
the food pantry’s 3,000 clients. In addi-
tion to the proteins, canned and fresh
fruits and vegetables, cereals, and
other staples provided by Yad Ezra,

the food pantry currently gives out
2,000 pounds of pasta every month.
Purim, a holiday known for giv-
ing gifts for the poor (“Matanot
L’evyonim”) begins Wednesday, Feb.
28. To date, synagogues and organiza-
tions from all over the community are
planning on participating.

Ezra or the Purim Pasta Shake-Up,

To help more Jewish day schools in-
fuse Israel into all aspects of school
life and learning, Th e iCenter, a na-
tional Israel education organization,
welcomed nine new day schools
across North America into its initia-
tive, including Hillel Day School of
Metropolitan Detroit in Farmington
Hills, which is now creating a plan to
make Israel education and experi-
ences a deeper part of all aspects of
school life, including classes such
as science, the arts, Jewish studies,
Hebrew language, all-school Israel
engagement and Israel travel.
Th e initiative, currently with its
second cohort, is funded in part
by the AVI CHAI Foundation and
through matching funds raised in
the schools’ communities.
Representatives from each school
gathered together this fall to begin
their work and to create a sense

of community among the schools.
Along with this in-person convening,
iNfuse includes site visits from Israel
education experts and other special-
ists, online seminars, and one-on-
one mentorship. A school-appointed
Israel coordinator will oversee both
the initiative and support the work
of faculty and staff .
“While Zionism is a core value
of Hillel Day School — and we do
a lot to foster a love of Israel in our
students — iNfuse showed us that
we can aspire to so much more,” says
Saul Rube, dean of Judaic Studies at
Hillel Day School of Metropolitan
Detroit. “Th rough our partnership,
our whole school community can
develop a consistent vision of what
we want Israel education at Hillel to
be and then leverage that vision to
channel our eff orts to achieve our
deepest goals.” •
