President’s Committee for the Arts
and Humanities and held the same
post under President Obama.
Mrs. Berman was a member of
the board of the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra, the Ringling Museum
of Arts in Sarasota Fla., and the
national arts advocacy organiza-
tion Americans for the Arts, from
whom she received its presti-
gious Legacy Award in 2014. She
was also a major supporter of
the Detroit Institute of Arts, the
Michigan Opera Theatre and the
Detroit Zoo, where she established
the Madeleine Berman Academy
for Humane Education.
Mrs. Berman also served on the
board of the Michigan Humane
Society and funded one of its
shelters in Westland. With her
husband, Bill, Mrs. Berman built
and supported the Berman Center
for the Performing Arts in West
Bloomfield.
She is survived by her son, Dr.
Jonathan Berman of Boulder Colo.,
(Nicky Berman); her daughter,
Ann Berman of New York City
(Daniel Feld); three grandchildren,
Laurence, Sara and Max.

Feb. 2, 2018.
He is survived
by his daughters
and son-in-law,

Shelley
Friedman, Lori
and Steven
Glick; grandchildren, Molly (Eric)
Shapiro and Max Glick; great-
grandchildren, Henry and Jack
Shapiro; brother, Alex Friedman;
many loving nieces, nephews,
other family members and friends.
Mr. Friedman was the beloved
husband of the late Jean Friedman;
the father of the late Jerald
Friedman; brother of the late
Sanford (Maxine) Friedman, the
late Ruth (Joseph) Simmons, the
late Ralph (Mildred) Friedman,
and the late Beatrice (Edward)
Mandell; brother-in-law of the late
Marilyn Friedman.
Interment was held at Adat
Shalom Memorial Park Cemetery
in Livonia. Contributions may be
made to a charity of one’s choice.
