jn

he new year is only a few weeks
old, and Dave Shanbaum
already has bowled a 300 game.
It’s the 17th perfect game of his
career. Yes, 17th.
The 44-year-old lifelong Windsor,
Ont., resident rolled his latest 300 on
Jan. 15 in the B’nai B’rith Brotherhood-
Eddie Jacobson League. Shanbaum
bowled 235-300-218—753 at Country
Lanes in Farmington Hills.
This is Shanbaum’s fifth season in
the league, and he has four 300 games
in league play. No. 3 came on Oct. 31,
2016. He bowled 211-300-226—737
that night.
“It doesn’t get easier to bowl a 300
the more times you do it. You still
feel the adrenalin flowing; you still
feel the pressure as you get to the
end of the game,” he said. “You have
to breathe, and you have to take it
one shot at a time.”
In the Brotherhood-Eddie Jacobson
League, it’s customary for many bowl-
ers to stop what they’re doing and
cheer on a fellow league bowler when
he’s getting close to a 300 game.
While the support is much appreci-
ated, it can be distracting.
“That usually happens in the 10th
frame,” Shanbaum said. “You know
it’s going to happen, so you need to
be ready to block it out and focus on
what you’re doing.”
Shanbaum threw 12 solid pocket
hits in his January gem.
The right-hander can’t say the same
for a close call Dec. 18 on another
league night. He bowled 299, leaving
the 4 pin on his final ball.
“That wasn’t a good shot,” he said. “I
left it inside.”
When he’s not bowling 300 games,
Shanbaum makes a living as a
computer programmer. He’s been
employed by Applied Systems in its
Windsor office for more than 20 years.
He has no aspirations of one day
becoming a professional bowler.
“The pros are on another level,” he
said. “They make it look so easy, and
they bowl on tough lanes with tricky
oil patterns.”
Shanbaum normally bowls in sev-
eral leagues at once. He’s bowling in
three leagues this season. Besides the
weekly Brotherhood-Eddie Jacobson

League, he’s also bowling in two
weekly leagues at the Rose Bowl in
Windsor.
He’s averaging 219 in the
Brotherhood-Eddie Jacobson League
and around 217 in the Windsor
leagues. He’s normally in the 215-220
average range, so it’s a typical season
for him.
His team in the Brotherhood-
Eddie Jacobson League is called
the Ten Pin Commandments, and
includes Dave Little, Ivan Fenyvesi
and Howard Keller along with sub-
stitute Steve Teper.
“We’re somewhere in the middle
of the pack in the standings,” he said.
Shanbaum has been bowling in
adult leagues since he was 18.
He bowled in a B’nai B’rith league
in Windsor before the league folded.
He then bowled in the B’nai B’rith
Downtown Fox League on the U.S.
side of the Detroit River before
moving to the Brotherhood-Eddie
Jacobson League.
