A Jewel Of A Man
ESTHER ALLWEISS INGBER CONTRIBUTING WRITER
A
s a newlywed in the early
1950s, Douglas Allen
Schubot had two ready-
made career paths. His father
owned Jules R. Schubot Jewellers,
a top-end salon favored by the
wealthy, including celebrities such
as Frank Sinatra and
Joan Crawford. His
Nosanchuk in-laws had
a residential-building
company, today’s Nosan
Signature Homes.
Jewelry eventually
won out for Douglas,
who became chairman
of Schubot Jewellers
in 1970. The company,
Schubot
founded in 1917, was
one of the region’s most
exclusive fine jewelry
salons until the banking crisis
forced its closing in 2010.
Douglas Schubot, 87, of Delray
Beach, Fla., died Jan. 18, 2018.
Rabbi E.B. “Bunny” Freedman offi-
ciated at his friend’s funeral service
on Jan. 22.
Upon completing eighth grade,
young Douglas got his wish to
attend Riverside Military Academy
in Gainesville, Ga., and Hollywood,
Fla. He and one other Jewish cadet,
Bobby Kutzen, met at the Detroit
train station and became lifelong
friends.
Douglas enrolled in ROTC at
Michigan State University, graduat-
ing in 1953. He had also earned his
pilot’s license. In the Air Force, he
was a second lieutenant. He and
Sydell were newlyweds during his
two-year military service in Japan.
He learned the business by
his father’s side and then, with
wife, Sydell, and son Brian, grew
Schubot’s Jewellers into a desti-
nation private salon catering to
discerning, wealthy individuals,
including members of the Ford,
Ilitch and Karmanos families.
“Dad knew designers making
unusual and special custom piec-
es,” said Brian Schubot, a graduate
gemologist and appraiser who
joined the salon in 1985 and now
works with Hamilton Jewelers in
Palm Beach Garden, Fla. His par-
ents traveled the world for their
business and personal art collect-
ing. They were great entertainers,
too.
Giving back was important to
Douglas. The Schubots hosted
“The Magic of Platinum” fundraiser
for Karmanos Cancer Institute
and served on the board of the
Founders Junior Council at the
Detroit Institute of Arts.
“On a slow week, they’d go to
three charity events,’” Brian said.
“They loved to be a part of the
community, loved to be involved.”
Douglas was past-pres-
ident of American Israel
Chamber of Commerce and
B’nai B’rith’s Centennial
Lodge. He served as
Michigan general chair-
man and on the national
board of State of Israel
Bonds. The Schubots were
honorees at a 1999 Israel
Bonds tribute dinner at
their own Temple Beth El,
where Douglas was on the
board and a Brotherhood
president.
He also was a board member
of Michigan Cancer Foundation,
Oakland Family Services, Boys
and Girls Clubs of Detroit,
Better Business Bureau-Eastern
Michigan and Michigan Retailers
Association.
Despite having a very full sched-
ule, “Dad always found time to
spend with us,” Brian said.
He was the beloved husband
for 63 years of Sydell Schubot;
cherished father of Julie Haimon,
Ronald Schubot and Brian
(Michele) Schubot; proud grandfa-
ther of Vered Haimon, Ari (Zhana)
Haimon, Galia Haimon, Justin
Schubot and Zoe Schubot; adoring
great-grandfather of Meir Haimon;
loving brother of the late Reta
Schubot Hesse; devoted son of
the late Jules and the late Baraga
Schubot; dear brother-in-law of Bill
and Carolyn Nosanchuk, Pet and
the late Manny Nosan. He is also
survived by his longtime caregiv-
ers, Duroy Burnett and Sandra
Reynolds; and lovingly remem-
bered by many nieces, nephews,
other family members and friends.
Interment was at Beth El
Memorial Park. Contributions
may be made to Jewish Hospice
