Ann Arbor ‘Sleeper’
Danny Raskin
Senior Columnist
Head to
Logan
for quaint
elegance and
reasonable
prices.
Some people might call it
a one-of-a-kind restaurant …
Others possibly may refer to it as
another of those small cafes that
might abound around the little
streets of New York … For certain,
such connotations would be
apropos for an Ann Arbor gem …
the kind that so many people are
looking for.
One may even say quaint
because there are few like it, and
the three owners, who all wanted
something different, no doubt
have succeeded with a most
desired contemporary and pleas-
ing-to-the-eye restaurant.
Maybe casual elegance, too,
with numerous dishes not found
anywhere else … easy-on-the-
pocket prices … a bistro whose
casual dress is the true meaning
of no dress code … This is Logan,
a lot of lil’ old New York … for
dining and fun all its very own …
Where the waitpersons promote
the fine dining casualness by
wearing aprons and no jackets.
Logan on Washington, between
Main and Ashley … wholly inde-
Ryan Gillies, Thad Gillies and Kevin Hobart
pendent with no other affiliation,
named after the owner/chef ’s
son … is another wonderful Ann
Arbor go-to place that just about
everybody seems to love so much
to dine as-you-like-it in an atmo-
sphere of quaint elegance.
When seeing the outside yel-
low/marigold facade for the first
time, one might not have looked
twice to think about going in …
Once inside, it is a soft dream
dining delight as are few others …
The feeling of being in an upscale
restaurant but without the overly
high-end prices.
The Ann Arbor “sleeper”
entered its 13th year this past
November … a huge favorite
among those who know about
it … trendy students, couples
celebrating birthdays and anni-
versaries, business persons, out-
to-dinners folks, etc. … An eatery
where the owners, Executive Chef
Thad Gillies, brother Ryan Gillies
and good friend Kevin Hobart,
can ply their interesting goodness
among one of the only bistros of
its kind in Michigan.
Their original thought was to
open perhaps in New York, but
they found their perfect dream-
come-true location in Ann Arbor.
It is a fine restaurant with a
hardly ever-before-seen offering
where Logan also gives a free
complimentary tasting before
each meal without customers
asking … It could be a daily soup
or something else that the chef
wants folks to try.
Coveted main dishes prepared
by Chef Thad include a beautiful
rosemary and garlic quail dish …
Excellent jumbo Thai sea scal-
lops … short ribs Bourguignon
braised with red wine … wild
boar Bolognese in red wine …
pan-seared Lake Superior walleye
… perch with galangal root and
kaffir lime sauce … leg of lamb
or duck … 10-oz. New York strip
steak … asparagus tempura, etc.
… All prepared in Logan’s own
personal fashion.
Also, a popular five-course
meal by Chef Thad that changes
with regularity and is offered
Tuesday-Thursday evenings and
Friday and Saturday after 8 p.m.
Regular hours are Tuesday-
Saturday 5-10 p.m. … Dining
room seating is 55 plus four bar
stools … Choice wines and liquors
served.
Logan, a dream-come-true for
the three owners whose contem-
porary American restaurant has
the excellent reputation of being
named among Ann Arbor's finest
eateries.

OLDIE BUT GOODIE … A

and was seen by one of the new

After about four minutes in the
examination room, she burst out
screaming and running down the
hall.
An older doctor stopped her
and asked what the problem was
… When she explained, he had
her sit down and relax in another
room.
The older doctor marched back
to the first doctor and demanded,
“What’s the matter with you? Mrs.
Terry is 63 years old and she has
four grown children and seven
grandchildren, and you told her
she was PREGNANT?”
The new doctor smiled smugly
as he continued to write on his
clipboard.
“Cleared her hiccups though,
didn’t it?”
CONGRATS … To Suzie Radner
on her birthday … To Jerry Light
on his 89th birthday … To Marilyn
Rubin on her birthday … To Ed
