Local Teens At USY Convention
NORTH SHORE PHOTOGRAPHY
Eight local teens involved in USY attended
the organization’s 67th annual convention in
Chicago over winter break. Focused on teens
as agents of change, participants from the
Conservative movement engaged in interac-
tive learning, gained leadership skills and
gave back to the Chicago community. A high-
light was a concert by Matisyahu.
Local participants included (top) Aviva
Lupovitch, Tania Miller, Sophia Gawel, Sam
Gawel and Jacob Ellenbogen as well as (bot-
tom) Hallie Bernstein, Hanna Lupovitch
and Dahvi Lupovitch. They represented the
Central USY Region (CRUSY). •

Snowy Trip Brings Cheer To Vets
A Christmas Day snowstorm could
not keep a platoon of Metro Detroit
Jewish War Veterans (JWV) from
their annual cross-state Mitzvah
Day Program journey to bring holi-
day cheer to patients at the Battle
Creek VA Medical Center.
The day’s festivities included
handing out care packages with
fruit, candy and warm socks and
providing, most importantly, some
much-needed companionship for
their comrades.
Lunch was served, followed by a
bingo game including as many as

170 participants — all walked away
winners. Prizes, either donated to
the JWV or purchased by the vets,
included assorted athletic wear.
The annual trip by chartered bus
to Battle Creek has been a tradition
of the local JWV for approximately
the last 70 years. The JWV is grateful
to the hospital staff for helping coor-
dinate another memorable day.
Thankfully, everyone arrived safely
Christmas night after returning
home in what was, at the time, the
worst snowstorm of the season. •
