Opening Jan. 12 in Detroit are Call Me
by Your Name, The Post and Phantom
Thread. All opened in limited release
in December in order to be eligible for
Oscar consideration, but here’s a brief re-
cap: Call Me stars Timothée Chalamet,
22, as a Jewish teen who has a brief
same-sex romance with a Jewish college
student; The Post chronicles the role of
the Washington Post in the public release
of the Pentagon Papers in 1971. Steven
Spielberg, 71, directed; Phantom Thread
stars Daniel Day-Lewis, 60, as a top
fashion designer in London in the 1950s,
dressing the rich and famous, including
royalty. He lives a work-centric life until
he’s unexpectedly smitten with a strong-
willed young woman.
The Polka King, a Netflix original (mostly)
comedy film, begins streaming on Friday,
Jan. 12. It is based on the true story of
Jan Lewan, a Pole who eventually settled
in Pennsylvania. He did well leading polka
bands until he masterminded an elabo-
rate Ponzi scheme, which collapsed in
2001 and he went to prison for five years.
Jack Black, 48, stars as Lewan. The rest
of the main cast is very “Jewish”: Jenny
Slate, 35, as Lewan’s wife, Marla; Jason
Schwartzman, 37, as Mickey, Lewan’s
best friend; and Vanessa Bayer, 36 as
“Binki Bear” (a woman who plays the
band’s mascot, a bear, at polka dances).
Polka King was directed by Maya Forbes
and co-written by Forbes and her hus-
band, Wallace “Wally” Wolodarsky, 47.
His credits include writing 10 Simpsons
episodes and co-writing several films
with Forbes.
The Netflix limited series Godless,
released in November, got pretty good
reviews and ended up on some critics’
best 10 of 2017 lists. It gets kudos from
me for plausibly depicting the heroism of
frontier women. It takes place in a mining
town after almost all the men are killed
in a mine explosion. The women show
realistic courage as they fend off unethi-
cal businessmen and a kill-crazy outlaw
gang (lead by Michigander Jeff Daniels).
Godless was written and directed by
Scott Frank, 57. Godless is his direct-
ing debut, but he has a long list of top
screenwriting credits, including Get
Shorty and Minority Report. In a recent
interview with Terry Gross, 66, the host
of Fresh Air on NPR, Frank was asked
about the moving last scene of the series
in which a pastor recites a beautiful
prayer for those killed saving their min-
ing town. Frank surprised Gross by say-
ing that it was a poem, “’Tis a Fearful
Thing” by Judah Halevi (1075-1141),
Black
Frank
the famous Spanish Jewish physician,
poet and philosopher. He came across it
years ago and knew it would work in this
scene.
Here’s the poem. Save it for the right
time:
’Tis a fearful thing to love what death
can touch. / A fearful thing to love,
to hope, to dream, to be — / to be,
And oh, to lose. / A thing for fools, this
/ And a holy thing, a holy thing to love.
/ For your life has lived in me, your
laugh once lifted me, your
word was gift to me. / To remember
this brings painful joy. •
