A charismatic, smooth-voiced performer prone to
smashing pianos, homegrown folk artist Ben Caplan
was once president of his USY chapter in Hamilton,
Ont. With a following from New Zealand to Ireland,
he mixes older musical sensibilities — inspired by
Eastern European and Jewish folk traditions — with
his own. “I like feeling connected to a long history,
culture and tradition. Judaism is full of little remind-
ers to lead a good life and rack up things that one
would be proud of at the end of the day,” Caplan told
the Hamilton Jewish News. “It’s nice to participate in
the same tradition as my great-great-grandfather —
in my own way.” The Ark, Ann Arbor. $15; free to Ark
members at the Solo level and above. Theark.org.
