The Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic
Studies at Wayne State University
announces it third annual writing
competition for Metro Detroit high
school students. Submissions may be
essays, short stories, or one or more
poems relating to some aspect of Jewish
life, culture or history. The goal of the
competition is not only to encourage
high school students to think and write
on matters of Jewish importance —
past, present and future — but also to
cultivate fresh perspectives on what
are often well-trodden and time-worn

conversations, discussions and debates.
Winning entries will be included in
a literary magazine published by the
Cohn-Haddow Center. Deadline for
submissions is March 1.
First place submissions in each cat-
egory will be awarded a cash prize of
$500, with cash prizes of $100 for hon-
orable mentions in each category.

HAVEN Opens
Farber Family Pet Center

The Farber Family, with generous sup-
port and a love of animals, provided
funding to HAVEN for the construc-
tion of its new pet center, which offi-
cially opened this fall.
The Farber Family Pet Center pro-
vides housing for companion animals
of domestic and sexual violence sur-
vivors who are living temporarily at
HAVEN’s residential shelter.
The 930-square-foot Farber Family
Pet Center offers a safe space for
family pets, and includes cat condos
and dog dens with outdoor access.
“Pocket pets,” such as birds, hamsters
and other small domestic animals,
are also welcomed and will be accom-
modated in a separate space in the
building.
The center relieves a survivor’s fear
of leaving behind a pet in a dangerous
situation. Family pets are often used
as leverage in homes where domestic
violence exists. Abusers may threaten,
harm or even kill a pet as a means of
control over a victim. According to

HAVEN, a national study of survivors
of domestic violence concluded that
54 percent of survivors living in a
shelter have experienced the injury
or death of a pet at the hands of their
abuser.
“Domestic and sexual violence
reveals the worst of humanity.
Survivors often struggle between their
own personal safety and that of their
beloved pets,” said Amna Osman,
HAVEN’s president and CEO. “We are
removing that brutal choice. We are
grateful to the Farber Family who has
removed this seemingly impossible
barrier. Without the Farbers, this pet
center simply would not have been
possible.”
HAVEN also acknowledges other
friends of the organization who have
supported the Pet Center, including
Mike Palmer, owner of Premier Pet
Supply. Palmer’s generous donation
included a fence to create a dog play
zone, top-quality food, toys and other
vital pet supplies. •
