Kabuki Japanese
& Korean Restaurant

I

t was very nice catching up with my friend Sue over lunch
dining
to celebrate our November birthdays.
around
We were fortunate in our choice of Kabuki Japanese &
the d Korean Restaurant, located in the Orchard 12 Plaza Shopping

Center in Farmington Hills. To my taste, Kabuki offers sushi
as fresh and delicious as any I’ve tried in Metro Detroit. First-
time restaurateur Mike Song purchased Kabuki from its previ-
ous owner. Before an unfortunate fire, Kabuki had a nearly
eight-year run on Orchard Lake Road at 13 Mile. The current
Kabuki, a mile south, opened two years ago. Another location
is on Michigan Avenue in Dearborn.
The Farmington Hills restaurant seats up to 110 guests
in two dining rooms. Décor features include square paper-

walls. In the main dining room, shelves holding wine and

liquor bottles are at the back, and a sushi bar is in the left cor-
ner. A nearby tank has live lobsters and fluke, the latter popu-
lar in Korean cuisine. One displayed item catching Sue’s fancy
was a fierce-looking Samurai war helmet.
The Kabuki chefs are Korean but learned to make sushi
from Japanese counterparts, according to restaurant manager,
Ki Kim.
I took his recommendation for Crunch Dragon Roll, one
of Kabuki’s more popular Special Rolls. It offered a pleasing
mouth-feel of textures, biting into shrimp tempura, crabmeat
and avocado topped with spicy tuna, crunch and eel sauce.
I always place the accompanying thin, fresh ginger slices on
sushi with soy sauce, avoiding the spicy green wasabi.
Other freshly made Special Rolls pictured on the menu
— 17 choices in all — carry interesting names like Cherry
Blossom, Super Energy, Double Climax and Kiss of Fire. These
and a vast number of other Japanese items can be checked off
on Kabuki’s list of a la carte sushi. For those with concerns,
cooked sushi is available.
The weekday Lunch Boat is a customer favorite, including
either a chicken, beef or salmon entrée. The complete meal
has soup, salad, edamame, sashimi ( fresh fish — no rice), half
California roll, shrimp and vegetable tempura, steamed rice
and fresh fruit. Chicken Teriyaki is among the popular entrée
choices also served in a compartmentalized Bento Box.
Reading over the combination
plates, comprised of sushi and/or
sashimi, tuna and more, I noticed a
55-piece sashimi special. That’s defi-
nitely for a crowd, as are the loaded
Kabuki party trays.
Our meals started well with com-
plimentary green tea and miso soup.
Kabuki also distinguishes itself and
enhances food with its house-made
spicy mayo and other dressings and
sauces. Sue loved the ginger dressing
Kabuki Japanese & on her lettuce-carrot salad so much,
purchased a quantity for home.
