Adds David: “He taught us how to
run a successful business with integ-
rity and compassion and he did that
purely by example.”
Over the course of his 53-year
career, Jerry worked equally as hard
on developing close relationships
with his customers. “As a child,
one of my lasting

ing up was dad

everybody,” Barry

where we went
with him, someone
always came over
Jerry Efros,
and said, ‘Hi, Jerry,’

just like they were
his best friend.”
You’d be hard pressed to find
a better example of the legacy of
integrity the Efros family created
than in the aftermath of the tragic
tornado that struck outside their
West Bloomfield store on March 21,
1976. Despite Howard’s car being

Barry Efros
to accommodate
their loyal custom-
ers.
“It’s the end of an era,” Howard
Efros lamented. “And we were lucky
enough to have worked in it.”
Howard and David told me that
after some time off they “may” try
to pick up a day or two of work at
a local pharmacy. Brother Barry
will continue working at the former
Sav-On location at Maple Road and
Telegraph. And by the way, if you
need a great pharmacist in Topeka,
Kansas, third-generation pharmacist
and David’s daughter Carly will be
happy to assist you.
While the Efros name will no
longer be on a building, seeing it
on a name tag will continue to be a
trusted and welcome sight. •

Jewish Family Service of Metro
Detroit and Chabad Jewish Center
of Bloomfield Hills are sponsoring
a new course: “Communication: Its
Art and Soul.”
In Jewish philosophy, communi-
cation is more than just a tool: It is
who we are. Humans are defined
as communicative beings with a
communicative soul, and aligning
ourselves with this soul is our raison
d’être.
Communication is not just anoth-
er self-help topic. It is how we live
up to our truest selves — how we
become the best father, mother, sis-
ter, brother, child, spouse, coworker,
boss, employee and friend we can
possibly be. Jewish teachings are
filled with insights that unlock the
secrets of communication as well as
powerful ideas that help us under-
stand the power of a word and how
to unleash its force constructively
and impactfully.
Communication: Its Art and Soul
will contrast Jewish thought with
scientific discovery to unearth the
essence of communication, and how
to utilize its powers to better our-
selves, our relationships and all of
society.
There are two options: six Monday
evenings from 7:30-9 p.m. begin-
ning Jan. 22 at Bloomfield Hills High
School and six Wednesday mornings
from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. beginning
Jan. 24 at the Jewish Family Service
building in West Bloomfield. The
course costs $80, including text-
book, with a 15 percent discount for
couples. The first class is free with
no obligation to continue.
