Ginopolis
celebrates
its 50th
anniversary.
Peter Ginopolis and Johnny Ginopolis
Two among the best-liked
and nicest gents in the restau-
rant business are this year cel-
ebrating their 50th anniversary
together.
Since back in 1967, when
Johnny and Pete Ginopolis
bought Capraro’s restaurant
in Redford Township with
their dad, George Ginopolis,
the brothers have established
a reputation that continues
to this day with their excel-
lent Ginopolis’ Bar-B-Q
Smokehouse, corner of 12 Mile
and Middlebelt, Farmington
Hills … Where today still
stands the four-sided clock
built by the Verdin Clock Co.
in Cincinnati, Ohio, builders
of clocks since 1842 … It was
erected by Johnny and Pete in
memory of their late mother
and father, Marion and George
Ginopolis.
When Johnny and Peter and
their parents purchased the
former Oba Bar and its under
65 seats, the brothers almost
immediately changed the
capacity from 65 or so … added
a banquet room, etc., and
today it holds about 175 plus
75 in the lounge, 25 bar stools
and 80 in its banquet room.
Bestsellers still include
Ginopolis’ luscious legend-
ary Montgomery Inn ribs and
their superb sauce … both of
which no other restaurant at
the time could boast of having
… World-famous ribs that their
uncle in Montgomery, Ala., Ted
“The Rib King” Gregory, owner
of Montgomery Inn, allowed
them to introduce here in 1990
… It made Ginopolis the only
other restaurant in the nation
to serve his ribs … and they
have been a huge favorite there
ever since.
Also, large sellers that today
include Ginopolis’ planked
whitefish, lake perch, frog legs,
sliced beef brisket, lamb chops,
etc., that year after year are
listed among its choice dishes.
Many are the times, too, that
it would be a most pleasant
surprise to note whom you
might be seated next to … So
many local personalities or
national names and show biz
folks that you may easily recog-
nize who might be appearing
or visiting here or nearby are
regular Ginopolis customers.
On this, their 50th anniver-
sary together, Johnny and Peter
Ginopolis, the two sons of
George and Florence Ginopolis,
who would have been so proud
of them, have certainly carried
on the family name with much
respect and honor.
MAIL DEPT. … From Dennis
Silber, Boca Raton, Fla. …
“After 22 years of operating
the Diabetic Care Network
in Detroit, former Detroiter
Howard Rich opened Howard’s
Famous Corned Beef & Deli
at 357 N. Federal Hwy. in Boca
Raton, Fla., with his nephew
Billy, also a former Detroiter,
where the key is ‘home made’
in almost everything they
serve. Detroit tastes pop up in
all food categories such as the
Maurice Salad of J.L. Hudson’s
fame, Howard’s famous piled-
high corned beef with Swiss
cheese, coleslaw and Russian
dressing, grilled for extra crisp-
ness, a quarter-pound hot dog
stuffed with cheese, wrapped
in bacon in a challah bun is its
Swanky Franky. Howard dares
anyone to beat their 10-ounce
jumbo burger, a combination
of short rib/ground chuck with
bacon slices and cheese on a
challah bun with all the trim-
mings.”
REARVIEW MIRROR …
Many people enjoyed the
orchestra of Frank Sidney at
Cabaret La Boheme featur-
ing the “Singing Saxophones”
and songstress Jeanne Rand
… But never knew that Sidney
also made a living flying an
airplane for his other work …
aerial advertising.
DEFINITION DEPT. … From
Russi Arden … Gefilte fish: “A
tasty mix of congealed fish
parts and transparent slime
jelly. The only food it is per-
missible for Jewish children to
refuse. In some families, they
may even be allowed to gag,
but politely.”
READER FAVORITE
RESTAURANTS of yesteryears
… From Jerry Chudnow … “I’ll
never forget the first time I
went to Stafford’s Restaurant
on Linwood and Grand
Boulevard. It was my first taste
of veal cutlets and mashed
potatoes and gravy. Boy, was
it good! And Hoa Kow on West
McNichols, west of Woodward,
for my first taste of almond
boneless chicken and won ton
soup. I still order it at Chinese
restaurants and can never get
enough!”
OLDIE BUT GOODIE …
While eating at the restaurant,
he saw an elderly couple at
another table ordering one
plate for the two of them. The
elderly man carefully divided
the food into two portions,
then poured half the drink
into the extra glass and put
it in front of his wife. He then
began to eat, and his wife just
sat there watching, her hands
folded in her lap.
At another table, the gent
asked them if they would
accept him buying them an
extra meal so they didn’t have
to split theirs. “Oh, no, that is
very kind of you,” they said.
“We have been married 70
years now, and everything has
always been and will always be
shared 50/50.”
The fellow asked her why
she wasn’t eating. “It’s his turn
with the teeth,” she replied.
CONGRATS TO … To Dr.
Fred Bernstein on his 89th
birthday … To Sylvia Shergin
on her birthday … To Sam
Jonah on his birthday … To
Mitchell and Jill Milan on their
30th anniversary. •
