The Southfield law firm of Maddin, Hauser, Roth & Heller
P.C., announced that Eric M. Wagman has joined the firm’s
expanding Defense and Insurance Coverage Practice Group
as an associate with a concentration in commercial general
liability defense. Wagman’s practice focuses primarily on
civil defense litigation including premises liability, trucking
accidents and general negligence. He also has experience
in commercial litigation (including contract disputes and
consumer fraud), claims of institutional abuse, professional
negligence, work-site accidents and products liability suits,
as well as complex trust and estate litigation.

The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer
Institute presented its 2017 Heroes
of Cancer at an awards ceremony
held Nov. 15, recognizing champi-
ons in 15 award categories. These
individuals and organizations raise
awareness of cancer prevention,
early detection and survivorship;
help fund programs to help cancer
patients and their families; and help
advance cancer research for those
with all types of cancer. Following
are some of this year’s inspir-
ing heroes. A Community Service
Awards for assisting in efforts to
reach the community with the
importance of cancer early detec-
tion, cancer care and/or survivor-

went to Craig Cook of Oak Park. A
Philanthropy Award, honoring an
individual and/or organization that
has dedicated resources and tal-
ents to benefit the cause of cancer,
went to Jeffrey and Beth Davidson
of Birmingham. The Dr. Michael
J. Brennan Scientific Distinction
Award for demonstrated leadership
in basic or clinical cancer research
went to Anthony Shields, M.D.
Ph.D., of Franklin. He is associate
center director, Clinical Sciences,
Karmanos Cancer Institute and
professor, Department of Oncology,
Wayne State University School of
Medicine.

The Detroit Historical Society announced it will debut a
new Moving Forward Award to recognize individuals who
are helping to transform our communities in meaningful
ways. A part of the society’s award-winning project Detroit
67: Looking Back to Move Forward, this honor will recog-
nize inspirational and transformational leaders annually.
One of the inaugural awards will be presented to Dr. Mark
Schlissel, president of the University of Michigan.
