Oak Park-based Congregation Beth Shalom celebrated its second-
annual holiday spectacular, Chanu-Con, Sunday, Nov. 19. The free
event, planned by congregation member Beth Rodgers, featured a
kosher food truck, live music and children’s activities including a bounce
house, candle dipping, finger painting and snow globe making and was
enjoyed by people throughout the community. Chanu-Con teamed up
with Yad Ezra, Metro Detroit’s only kosher food bank, to accept nonper-
ishable kosher food donations to help families in need. •

In October, the Jewish Community Relations Council/AJC hosted its annual lun-
cheon for Detroit media. The program, an essential tool in ensuring Israel’s per-
spective continues to be shared locally, featured Yonah Bob, the intelligence, ter-
rorism and legal analyst for the Jerusalem Post.
The gathering included the publishers, vice presidents, editorial editors, anchors,
reporters, news directors and producers from all of the area’s print, television and
radio outlets.
Speaking on the heels of the Las Vegas attack, the deadliest mass shooting
in U.S. history, Bob addressed “Confronting the Next Wave of Terror: The Age of
Lone Wolves,” and shared Israel’s unique experience and its insights into defying
the scourge of terror.
For more than a decade, the annual media luncheon has brought Israel’s story
to the media through Israeli dignitaries and journalists, and is part of JCRC/AJC’s
ongoing efforts to help area reporters understand Israel and the situation in the
Middle East, and to reinforce JCRC/AJC’s role as the media relations agency of
the Detroit Jewish community. The program was made possible through the gen-
erous support of former JCRC officer Linda Finkel and her husband, Bob Finkel. •
