Time To Get LIT
Chanukah comedy and klezmer show
are coming to Eastern Market.
G
et ready for laughs, drinks and dancing this holiday
season in Detroit. An all-star lineup is set to take the
stage on Saturday, Dec. 16, 8:30 p.m. at The Eastern,
3434 Russell, in Detroit’s Eastern Market.
The show, titled simply LIT, will feature the hilariously-
irreverent comedic duo from the popular web series YidLife
Crisis, live music from local band Klezundheit and a DJ — all
MC’d by Hollywood standup comedian (and Metro Detroit
native) Sandy Danto. The event is 21+, with a cash bar and
entertainment aimed at a younger crowd — whether in age
or at heart.
The evening of laughs is
being organized by The Well,
and sponsored by the JCC
of Metro Detroit, NEXTGen
and the Jewish Federation,
with additional support
from the Schvitz, Reboot and
Provisions Ferndale, which
is providing free vegetarian
appetizers to accompany
fresh latkes, available when
doors open until supplies
last.
The young duo YidLife
Crisis — made up of actors
Jamie Elman and Eli Batalion
— are best known for their
edgy short skits in Yiddish
with English subtitles. While
in town, they’ll be filming
a curated tour of Jewish
Detroit, produced by the JCC
under the direction of Emmy
Award-winning film director
and editor Michael Elliot.
The short video, part of
YidLife’s #GlobalShtetl series featuring Jewish cities around
the world, will be released online in early 2018 and feature a
blend of prominent young Metro Detroit leaders and curious
Jewish tales of Detroit past and present.
The Klezundheit band performs an eclectic mix of mod-
ern klezmer, gypsy, Balkan, Israeli, Jewish and jazz music.
Comprised of an extensive musical array — flute, violin, tru-
mpet, clarinet, saxophone, trombone, harmonica, accordion,
bass, tuba, piano and percussion — the band also leads its
audience in traditional Jewish folk dance instruction.
Reached by the Jewish News while on a treadmill in
Hollywood, Calif., comedian Sandy Danto said: “Hey, Detroit!
I gotta get this workout in so I can eat as much Buddy’s
Pizza and Coney Island hot dogs as I can while I’m there
[heavy breathing].”
Jamie Elman, actor behind the character Chaime in
YidLife Crisis, looks forward to the show as well: “We’re seri-
ously delighted to get seriously LIT in Detroit this Hanukah.
Chanukah. Chanukkah. Whatever. Lit’s do this, Motor City …
LIT’chaim!” •
Tickets for LIT are available for $25 at bit.ly/welllit and include one
complimentary drink and a near-guarantee that you’ll be blissfully offended
at some point in the show.
