acob Cohen woke up just weeks shy of his 17th birthday
to find out he scored that magic number for high school
seniors: a perfect 36 on his ACT.
“Seeing my score for the first time was a moment that
inspired a feeling of complete fulfillment,” said Cohen, a
senior at Walled Lake Northern High School. “All of the work
I put in and the help I received from my parents, friends and
teachers since my parents first taught me how to read afford-
ed me the opportunity for a moment that I will never forget,
a moment that represents a step toward achieving my goals.”
Greg Diamond, WL Northern principal, said, “We are all
very proud of Jacob. His commit-
ment to his academic path is evi-
dent by looking at his GPA, which
is a 4.21. He has never earned a
grade less than an A in the class-
es he has taken here. While his
academic accomplishments are
great, his wonderful attitude and
demeanor are what will make
him a success in life. The staff at
Northern have enjoyed watching
Jacob grow and mature into the
upstanding young man he is. We
wish him well in his continued
quest for knowledge and under-
standing.”
Cohen is the son of Leslie and
Jeffery Cohen. He is undecided on
his choice of college, but his top
three schools include Columbia
University, the University of
Michigan and Northwestern
University.

With this perfect test score,
his high GPA in many Advanced
Placement courses and a long list of extra-curricular activi-
ties that include volunteering for Yad Ezra and drumming for
the marching band, his dream schools seem ever closer to
reach.
He is relieved he will “never have to take that test again.”
However, the perfect score means the possibility of living
farther away from his Michigan roots is closer to becoming
reality.
“Although Columbia is my dream school, I now realize that
getting in is getting closer to reality,” Cohen said. “But the
reality is that it’s in New York City; it’s nine hours away, and
I might like to stay closer by to see my family and keep in
touch with my friends in Michigan.”
His advice to those about to take the college admissions
test:
“Get the real, paper practice books. Work through the
questions and then examine with extra care the ones you got
wrong,” Cohen advised. “And, above all, know that you have
been preparing for this test with all the knowledge you have
gained since the day you walked into kindergarten. When
you are in the test room, slow down, focus and go with your
gut when putting down your final answers.” •
