At Ann Arbor’s first MegaChallah event held in September, 125 women
came to their places at the Ann Arbor Jewish Community Center, each with
a big bowl and the measured ingredients for a challah loaf. Each chair was
draped with a pink apron.
The event was emceed by Chanchi Goldstein. Organizer Esther Goldstein
offered words on the mitzvah of challah, followed by Eileen Freed, interim
director of the local Federation, and then Esther Freeman performed.
All went home with a rising challah loaf to bake. The event was sponsored
by Chabad and co-sponsored by the Jewish Federation, JCC and Akervall
Technologies Inc. •

Yad Ezra hosted its annual fundraiser in October at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek. Honorees were Aimee and Richard Simtob and dinner co-chairs
were Amy and Eric Ersher and Lisa and Scott Stern. Proceeds from the
event are used to purchase groceries that are distributed to the 1,300 client
families who come to Yad Ezra every month.
This year, the strolling supper was followed by a brief program that
recognized Ellie Glen, the recipient of the Diane and Emery (z”l) Klein
Volunteer of the Year Award and paid tribute to the Simtobs.
Richard Simtob joined Yad Ezra’s board of directors in 1998 and served
as president of the organization in 2011 and 2012. He was responsible
for drafting the “client choice shopping list” model allowing clients to
choose the items they need and want. Aimee and Richard have worked on
committees, volunteered at Yad Ezra and, along with their children, Brooke
and Brad, made grocery deliveries to the homebound.
