quasi-Nazi Hungarian nationalist
group, say Gorka is a sworn mem-
ber. Gorka wore a medal typically
worn by Vitézi Rend members to a
Jan. 20 inauguration ball, but said
it was a gesture honoring his late
father.
Other notables attending were
Laura Loomer, an alt-right activ-
ist whose account was closed
by Twitter, and Joe Posobiec, a
far-right zealot whose claim to
fame, among other extreme activi-
ties, is infiltrating an anti-Trump
rally while carrying a sign “Rape
Melania” in an attempt to tarnish
the protesters.
Morton Klein, who has been
ZOA’s president for more than two
decades, said in an interview, “I
can’t control who supports me,”
while acknowledging he has many
“extreme far-right Jews support-
ing me.” So, has he asked himself,
“Why?” And, we might also ask,
does he feel comfortable having
this support?
Another question: Why does he
believe David Duke, the former
grand wizard of the KKK, declared
when Trump won that, “This is
one of the most exciting nights of
my life?”
No, Klein can’t control who
Greenberg’s View
supports him, but he can control
whom he breaks bread with and
shares a cup of wine.
This is not about support Klein
can’t control. Bannon and Gorka
were special guests. This is the sec-
ond time Bannon was invited (the
first time he was still in the White
House, but he did not attend)
and this year, Bannon received a
standing ovation. His nationalistic
rhetoric was frequently interrupted
with applause, according to press
reports.
Bannon and Gorka were two key
aides to a president who described
protesters shouting “Jews will not
replace us” at the Charlottesville
protests as “some very fine people.”
The political evolution of the
ZOA is disturbing and sad, given
the organization’s outstanding his-
tory. Moreover, it was developed
under the banner of supporting the
State of Israel.
The Israelis obviously will not
criticize the ZOA or Klein, but can
anyone imagine them fawning over
the likes of Bannon, Gorka, et al?
A prediction: One day the ZOA
will rue its alliance. •
