verifies that being welcoming to refu-
gees is in our region’s own economic
self-interest.
In fact, America’s history as a
place of refuge — inscribed in the
poem by Emma Lazarus, a Jewish
American poet, on the Statue of
Liberty’s base — is what brought my
great-grandfather here. I think of the
hundreds, if not thousands, of jobs
that my family has helped create for
fellow Americans and recognize that
opening our doors to other victims of
persecution will secure, not threaten,
America’s economic future. •
