It Doesn't

The menorah owned by acclaimed
Jewish Americans — from a Time 100
Most Influential to a Tony Award-
winning producer and gracing homes
from Boston to Shanghai — is now
available for a limited-edition pur-
chase.
Detroit designers Israel and Erik
Nordin created the 25-foot “Detroit
Menorah” utilized each season in
Campus Martius for thousands of
attendees of the Menorah in the D
Celebration (this year Dec. 12, start-
ing at 5:30 p.m.).
Their made-in-Detroit replica of
the giant sculpture is perfect for a
special holiday gift, a wedding or
house-warming present, or to give as
an award for a distinguished honoree.
Each menorah is handmade in the
Nordins’ sculpture studio from streel.
They are fully functional and are
approximately 15 inches tall. These
have been given as gifts to the hon-
ored expats each year at the Jewish
Expat Reception during the Detroit
Homecoming.
The Detroit Menorah is offered in
limited quantity for the next three
weeks at a cost of $400, with a por-
tion of each order going to a Detroit
charity. To order, call (313) 330-2259.

Tony-winning Broadway producer Jeffrey
Seller, formerly of Southfield, holds a
replica of the “Detroit Menorah” alongside
Rabbi Yisael Pinson at the 2016 Jewish
Expat Reception.

The Nordin brothers have com-
pleted large-scale public art pieces for
Detroit, Grosse Pointe Park, Harrison
Township, Port Huron and Brighton.
They are now working on a 25-foot
piece for the city of Sterling Heights.
This spring, they are unveiling their
new Detroit Design Center and Event
Space in Midtown Detroit. •

Torah Up Close And Personal

What would it look like to bring a
Torah to the pub? On Thursday, Oct.
12, The Well, Moishe House Royal
Oak and Temple Israel gathered a
group of just under 100 young adults
for a Simchat Torah celebration and
pub trivia at 5th Avenue in Royal
Oak. Teams of eight competed, with
each trivia round including both pop
culture and Jewish-specific ques-
tions.
During the gathering, the group
circled the room and Rabbis Dan
Horwitz of The Well and Jen Lader
of Temple Israel unraveled the Torah
for everyone to hold and see. The
two then went throughout the room
pointing out highlights in the text,
sharing the narrative along the way.
For many, this was the first time
they had ever seen a completely
unrolled Torah scroll. For others,
it was the first time they’d been up

close and personal with a Torah
since their bar/bat mitzvah. For all, it
was a celebratory evening, filled with
learning, questions and pizza. •
