Mentors and mentees with Jewish Family
Service’s Mentor Connection program
enjoyed a fun afternoon at Marvin’s
Marvelous Mechanical Museum. Games
were played. Prizes were won. And fun was
had by all. Mentor Connection works to
match adult mentors with Oakland County
youth who can benefit from their support
and guidance. Mentors are always needed.

Hindu And Jewish
Communities Join To
Celebrate Festivals Of Lights

The Metropolitan Detroit area’s
Jewish and Hindu communities
will join to celebrate the holidays of
Chanukah and Diwali at 7 p.m. on
Thursday, Nov. 30, at the Bharatiya
Temple in Troy.
“Finding Common Ground
through the Festivals of Light: A
Chanukah & Diwali Celebration”
will feature a commemoration of the
two festivals and a night of learn-
ing about the unique practices and
traditions of the Jewish and Hindu
religions. The program will include
a light vegetarian meal that reflects
the traditions of both religions.
David Kurzmann, executive
director of the Jewish Community
Relations Council/ AJC (JCRC/
AJC), and Frank Stella of the Hindu
American Foundation’s (HAF)
Leadership Council will provide

insight into their respective holidays
and discuss how each holiday pres-
ents its members with lessons on
channeling their faith into advocacy.
The discussion will be mod-
erated by HAF board member
Padma Kuppa. Rabbi Aura Ahuvia
of Congregation Shir Tikvah will
engage the audience in song and
offer a traditional prayer along-
side Pudit Shri Kaushik Kumar
Indravadan Joshi of the Bharatiya
Temple. The participants will also
light the Chanukah menorah and
Diwali diyas, the traditional ritual
objects used during these holidays.
