soul of blessed memory continued from page 59 Eugene Axelrod Charlene Axelrod Band DR. EUGENE and MRS. CHARLENE AXELROD, of Plymouth, died May 20 and May 14, 2017, respectively, both of cancer. Dr. Axelrod was born in Indianapolis, Ind., to Jack and Bessie Axelrod. In his lifelong pursuit of knowledge, he earned degrees in mathematics, chem- istry, medicine and business from the University of Michigan, the University of Connecticut, Harvard University and Stanford University. He was a chemist at Arthur D. Little and Merck before tran- sitioning to medicine, where he became double board-certified in anesthesiology and emergency medicine. Mrs. Axelrod was born in Wailuku, Maui, to Charles and Annie Leong. This courageous “island girl” journeyed to Michigan for college, where she gradu- ated from Hope College with majors in English and German. She later earned her master’s degree in Asian-American studies from Seton Hall University. She retired from teaching middle-school English to raise her children. Dr. and Mrs. Axelrod met in New York, attending Chinese language classes together. After marriage, they led adventurous lives with stops in France, Belgium, Connecticut, Oregon, Michigan, California, Idaho and Iowa before returning to finally settle in Michigan in 2000. They loved to travel, hike, backpack and constantly learn, especially explor- ing other cuisines and languages. Their favorite places included the Grand Canyon, Glacier National Park, Hawaii, France and Argentina. They were devot- ed parents and grandparents: funny, brilliant, compassionate, supportive and loving. They are deeply missed. They are survived by son and daughter-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Robert and Chau Axelrod; daughter and son- in-law Dr. Deborah Axelrod and Mr. John Shreck; grandchildren, Naomi and Noah Axelrod, and Samuel and Hannah Shreck; siblings and-in-laws, Dr. Linda Golumbia, Dr. Richard Axelrod, Alvin and Ernelle Leong, and Ronald and Pamela Leong. Mrs. Frost sang opera with the Metro Singers in Oak Park and wrote poetry, publish- ing A Living Portrait, Poetry by Shirley Frost. SIDNEY LANTZ, 97, of Southfield, died Nov. 9, 2017. The oldest elected official in the United States, Mr. Lantz has served as a fire and police commissioner Lantz for eight years and as a c. 1990 councilman for the city of Southfield for more than 36 years. He grew up in the melting pot of Manhattan and then served as a medic during World War II. A volun- teer with VISTA (Volunteer In Service To Americans), a domestic arm of the Peace Corps, he was awarded the Kennedy/Shriver Medal for service and also received the Medal of Detroit for his contribution to the improvement of the school system. He also helped Jewish causes like Yeshiva Beth Yehudah, the Kollel Institute, Congregation Shaarey Zedek and Akiva Hebrew Day School. He volunteered with the Art Council, the Youth Commission and helped the Committee of Senior Citizens Office. Mr. Lantz became a councilman for
