Where Was Coverage?
Recently, an event benefiting Jewish
Hospice took place in a private home
in Bloomfield Hills. All the artists
were Jewish and donated 20 percent
of their profits to the very worthwhile
organization.
I had to look twice to find a postage
stamp-size mention of it. That the
JN did not consider this important
enough to devote space for an article
(Jewish charity/Jewish artists/Jewish
community), I consider a missed
opportunity and one that didn’t dem-
onstrate the type of community sup-
port I would wish for in the JN.
Please consider showcasing this
event next year so more people can
be aware of it and attend, if they wish.

VFI Honors Two
Local Volunteers
Volunteers for Israel (VFI-USA)
announces both a new volunteer
program in Israel and a recent event
celebrating extraordinary service by
two local volunteers.
“VFI Plus,” a new addition to VFI’s
program options, is being coordinated
by Carol Kent, Great Lakes co-region-
al director. Carol has been involved in
organizing and leading this exciting
a non-combat IDF army base along-
side Israelis and other volunteers
from around the world.
The program offers a way to con-
tribute to the State of Israel in a very
direct way.
Our local VFI Team is available to
speak to groups and individuals about
the VFI/Sar-El programs, including
the new VFI Plus program.
For additional information, e-mail
michgan@vfi-usa.org, visit the VFI-
USA website at vfi-usa.org or call
Carol Kent or Ed Kohl at (248) 420-3729.
Seated are volunteers Cookie Koblin and Barbara
Cantor, both of West Bloomfield. Standing are co-
regional directors Paul Matlin of Southfield, and
Carol Kent and Ed Kohl, both of West Bloomfield.
VFI/Sar-El alternative.
VFI Plus is a 17-day, all-inclusive
experience that combines two weeks
of volunteer service on an Israel
Defense Forces (IDF) base and eight
days of touring within Israel.
A five-minute video describing the
VFI Plus program can be found at

VFI Great Lakes co-regional direc-
tors Kent, Paul Matlin and Ed Kohl
recently honored volunteers Barbara
Cantor and Cookie Koblin, who each
served more than 30 times on the pro-
gram. They have also been recognized
by the Sar-El leadership in Israel.
Volunteers for Israel is associated
with Sar-El, a nonprofit organiza-
tion that administers the program in
Israel. Volunteers typically spend one
to three weeks living and working on

• In the Oct. 26 stories about the

Don't Make this
Mistake!
One thing leads to another and before
you know it, you have $40,000 of
credit card debt. You’re not happy
about it, but you say to yourself,
“I can handle it. The minimum
payments are only $1,000/month and
each month I’m paying $500 extra
so it will go away.” The problem is
that it does not go away! When you
pay the $1,500 every month, you
leave yourself cash short; so when
you need to purchase something, you
charge it! The result – the balances
don’t go down – if fact they continue
to creep up until you’ve tapped out
your available credit. If the cards
are at 18% interest, you’re paying
$7,200 per year in interest. Over 20
years = that’s $144,000 toward your
retirement that you’ve forever lost –
plus the interest you would have
earned on that money while you were
saving it. Don’t Make this Mistake.
You need to get rid of the credit card
debt – and the sooner you do it, the
sooner you begin saving the $1,500
per month – for every month going
forward. Call us, we’ll show you
how it’s done.
