and restaurateur Michael Kornick.
Kornick happened to be a
longtime friend of Boyer’s wife,
Kimberly, and the two quickly hit
it off. Kornick was looking to hire
someone young and energetic, and
nominated Boyer as his right-hand
man for his latest development,
DMK Burger Bar.
After minimal deliberation, Boyer
gladly accepted the position of gen-
eral manager in 2009. After several
years of hard work, he realized he
belonged in the restaurant busi-
ness. In 2013, he packed his bags for
Detroit, eager to bring his skills to
his beloved hometown.
After getting situated, Boyer start-
ed a small consulting business, with
Slows Bar-BQ as his first client. The
buzz about his managing expertise
spread rapidly and he was chosen
as a partner for Gold Cash Gold in
2014.
Boyer’s two-year stint at Gold
Cash Gold propelled him forward in
his career, allowing him to exit con-
fidently. “I learned a lot about what
works and what doesn’t about loca-
tion, price point and the product
itself,” he says.
With newfound knowledge, he
took a big leap with Voyager, which
opened in March. While there are
plenty of seafood restaurants in the
area, a contemporary oyster bar
was far from the norm.
He selected a quaint Ferndale
neighborhood as his landing spot
and chose a winning pair of talent-
ed chefs, Jennifer Jackson and Justin
Tootla, to lead the kitchen.
Boyer spent a great deal of time
developing Voyager’s raw bar,
where diners can sample oys-

ters from all over the globe. The
remainder of the dynamic menu
boasts enticing entrees like the
mussels and marrow, peel-and-eat
shrimp and the spicy chili crab
spaghetti.
While Boyer is pleased with
locals’ feedback on Voyager’s cui-
sine, he takes special pride in select-
ing talented employees.
“The greatest compliment for me
is when people mistake our staff for
our owners,” he says.
Boyer is already vying for a simi-
lar reaction to his latest develop-
ment, which is set to open in 2018.
Loverboy, a fast-casual spot, will
be devoted entirely to Americans’
favorite pair — burgers and craft
beer.
Situated in Detroit’s Capitol Park
Historic District, Loverboy will be a
casual gathering place where locals
can indulge in mouth-watering
grass-fed beef burgers and crispy
hand-cut fries.
To create the ideal atmosphere,
Boyer partnered with Five/Eighths
Architecture, also credited for
Voyager’s charming ambiance.
Inspired by the essence of Wes
Anderson films, Boyer borrows the-
matic elements from the director’s
playful style while developing the
layout.
When Loverboy opens its doors,
patrons will place their orders at
the counter or at the walk-up win-
dow along Grand River.
Construction is well under way,
and Boyer’s latest project is brain-
storming a self-service kiosk for
diners in a hurry. “We want it to feel
old-school, but have all of the mod-
ern conveniences,” he says.
The ideas are constantly flowing,
but Boyer somehow finds time to
relax. When he’s not running back
and forth between his two restau-
rants, you can find him cozied up at
home with his wife and 2-year-old
daughter.
No matter how busy life gets, he
always arrives on time for Monday
night dinner at his grandmother’s
house and is slowly introducing
his little one to all types of cuisine.
Boyer notes with a sigh of relief
that she is already an adventurous
eater.
Family definitely comes first for
this sharp restaurant innovator,
but the people of Metro Detroit are
a close second. With a desire to
use his superpower for good, who
knows where Eli Boyer will send his
diners next? •
