Fall Literacy Workshop
“How Playing and Learning
Relates to a Child’s Growth
and Development” is the
subject of the Detroit Jewish
Coalition for Literacy’s (DJCL)
fall workshop for literacy
tutors on Friday, Nov. 10, from
10:30 a.m.-noon at the Max M.
Fisher Federation Building in
Bloomfield Hills.
Designed to provide hands-
on tools for new and vet-
eran volunteers, the workshop
will feature Nechole Drake
McClendon, program coor-
dinator at the Detroit Public
Schools Foundation for Early
Learners. McClendon will high-
light early childhood education
research-based playing and
learning as it relates to a stu-
dent’s development. The inter-
active workshop will include
a plethora of learning tool
options for tutors to incorpo-
rate into their individual teach-
ing styles.
Charged with collaborat-
ing with the Detroit Public
Schools Community District’s
Foundation for Early Learners
and the newly created Early
Childhood Fatherhood
Initiative, McClendon also
manages the Detroit College
Promise Scholarship Program
and serves as the Foundation’s
grants management liaison.
Founded and facilitated
by the Jewish Community
Relations Council/AJC, the
DJCL engages volunteers
from local Jewish organiza-
tions, impacting kindergarten
through fourth-grade students
in schools in Detroit and
Oakland County through tutor-
ing, enrichment programs and
book drives. The DJCL con-
ducts training workshops and
provides resources for its vol-
unteer tutors. JCRC/AJC board
member Sue Birnholtz chairs
the DJCL.
