he Bloomfield Hills home of
Eugene and Tamara Friedman
was transformed into a high-
fashion showcase earlier this year
when Israel’s first couturier MASKIT
joined forces with the Friedmans in
support of Soroka Medical Center.
Chaired by Judy Grant, more than
50 guests gathered to learn about
Soroka and enjoy a stylish afternoon
of friendship and philanthropy.
American Friends of Soroka Medical
(AFSM) executive director Rachel
Heisler Sheinfeld attended the
special event and shared the history
and profound impact of Soroka in
Southern Israel.
Soroka has an important link to the
fashion industry, as the original funds
to build the hospital in 1959 were
raised by the legendary labor icon
David Dubinsky from the members
of the International Ladies Garment
Workers Union.
Located in Be’er Sheva, Soroka
Medical Center is a unique institution
and a global symbol of peaceful
coexistence. It is one of the nation’s
largest, busiest and most important
hospitals, and the sole major medical
center for all of southern Israel.
Through the delivery of urgently
needed medical care to the vast
and profoundly diverse society in
the Negev, Soroka makes a unique
contribution to the building of a future
of security and peaceful coexistence
for Israel, serving Arabs and Jews side-
by side.
Soroka is a beacon for safety,
healing and unity in the most trying
of situations. It offers recognized
excellence across the entire
spectrum of medical care. Soroka
is an outstanding national strategic
asset: It is essential to meeting the

medical needs of the Israel Defense
Forces as IDF operations and bases
are increasingly centered in the
Negev. Soroka is fully engaged in the
challenges, complexity and richness of
the fabric of life in the Negev.
Soroka is currently engaged is
several critically important projects,
including the creation of a new
Comprehensive Cancer Center, which
will be the first for the region and fill
a huge gap. In addition, it plans to
build a new Rehabilitation Hospital, as
well as replace the existing Neonatal
Intensive Care Center with a larger,
missile-proof building.
The hospital also needs to expand
its Emergency Room & Trauma
Center. The busiest ER in Israeli,
Soroka is determined to make certain
it is always prepared to care for
incoming war casualties, victims of
terror and to meet the emergency
medicine needs of the vast region.
Donations to support Soroka
Medical Center can be mailed to
AFSMC, PO Box 184-H, Scarsdale, NY

acknowledging your donations. For
