by Nazis, was interned at a coal
mining workcamp and somehow
escaped the ghettos and Gestapo
to survive the war in barns and
woods in Poland. She learned to
speak Russian, Polish, Ukrainian,
Hebrew and Yiddish and used her
intelligence and stubborn will to
evade the fate of 98 percent of
Polish Jews
Edith came to America as
a young refugee with only the
clothes on her back, in her arms
her infant daughter, Goldie, who
was born in an Austrian dis-
placed persons camp, and with
her shell-shocked husband, who
had won her over by buying her
shoes.
She taught herself English and
how to sew and helped to sup-
port her family one hem at a time
in her Detroit attic with a foot-
powered Singer. Through her dif-
ficult life, she had the resolve to
keep making the best of things, to
be defiant and to kibbitz her way
through most of it.
As an active participant with
Shaarit Haplaytah, B’nai B’rith
and the Holocaust Memorial
Survival Group, Edith was gener-
ous to many charitable organiza-
tions.
She is remembered by fam-
ily as a latke pusher, a master of
Rummikub, a yente-in-chief and
4’10” of pure chutzpah. The fam-
ily fondly remembers her, loved
her and will never forget her.

wonderful.’’

We hear kind words consistently. We’re proud that
people feel comfortable enough with us to openly tell
us how much they appreciate what we did for them.
In fact, it’s this appreciation that drives us to offer the
very best in comfort, compassion and service.
