Thank you for saving lives! jews d in the continued from page 10 “It was a JET fundraiser at the Hermelin house. Ed Asner was the headliner. The weather that day in L.A. kept him from arriving. The guests were wined and dined and ulti- mately treated to a presentation via phone — in the pre- Skype days. Everyone felt so incredibly comfortable and well fed that no one seemed to mind.” — Susan Terebelo, Southfield Susan Terebelo Thank you for attending Magen David Adom’s inspirational Detroit Gala on Tuesday, October 17 at Shaarey Zedek. Your participation greatly contributed to the success of this incredible event. We are delighted you could see firsthand MDA’s amazing technology and to give special recognition to the remarkable 2017 MDA volunteers from the Detroit area: Lauren Goldstein, Samantha Katz, Nathan Klausner, and Stephanie Schulman. Our hope is that you came away from the evening with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the cutting edge tools MDA uses to save lives every day. As a global leader and innovator in emergency medicine, MDA’s fleet of about 1,100 ambulances, 300 Medicycles, and dozens of other emergency vehicles stand ready each and every day to respond to medical emergencies — small and large — in Israel. MDA is also the guardian of Israel’s blood supply, distributing blood to 96% of Israel’s hospitals and 100% to Israel Defense Forces. And as a world leader in disaster relief, MDA paramedics recently traveled to Houston to provide their expertise and professional assistance in the aftermath of the hurricane there. If you have already made a 2017 contribution to MDA, many thanks for your generous support. It’s truly valued and much appreciated. If you haven’t, please consider sponsoring an ambulance or Medicycle, naming a room in the new Marcus National Blood Services Center, or replenishing much-needed medical equipment and supplies. “I have so many memories conversations. We wrote our speeches in her kitchen. Just she and I. Doreen has always been a men- tor for all. Lovely, informative and passionate for her com- munity and others. She walked me through all her treasures and shared all the stories about her travels as I’m sure she has done with many. How she shows up at almost everything in our city and others to show her support to this day will always be the mystery. I think she had a clone.” “David and I grew up on Pasadena in Detroit. He lived near Livernois, and I lived in a house near Dexter, next door to Sid Forbes who lived in a three-story apartment build- ing. David and I were in the same class both at Shaarey Zedek and at Central High School. “In our senior year, we were both in the play The Barrett’s of Wimpole Street, where Sharon Brown played Elizabeth Barrett Browning. We always practiced on Sunday morning at the Hermelins’ home, where Doreen graciously laid out a breakfast spread. There was always laughter and fun, terrific memories!” — Sue Simons Smith
