est Bloomfield High School senior Zack Goldman,
a member of Temple Israel, is excited to announce
the Kick Back, A Metro Detroit Shoe Swap, taking
place at West Bloomfield High School on Sunday, Oct. 22,
from noon-5 p.m.
Goldman and partner and fellow senior Nickon Katibai
belong to DECA, an international competitive business orga-
nization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs
in four fields of business: marketing, finance, hospitality and
management.
The Kick Back will provide an opportunity for Metro
Detroit shoe enthusiasts to come together to buy, sell and
trade high-end sneakers. The students organized the event
as part of their 2018 DECA project.
Julie Zalla, DECA adviser at West Bloomfield High School,
said Zack and Nickon have worked very hard on organizing
this event and have created an 11-page
advertising campaign for DECA.
They both have a passion for sneak-
ers and marketing. “We have been
wanting to do this for a few years,”
Nickon says. “We went to our first
event a few years ago. From there, our
passion for sneakers increased.”
Adds Zack, “We went as vendors
and shared a table. Ever since, we
wanted to take it to the next level and
give people the same opportunity we
ABOVE: Zack Goldman and Nickon Katibai had.”
Their third partner, Brendan
Cherrin, has thrown a few sneaker events in the past. “We
felt it would be beneficial to add him to our team. He gave us
ideas and feedback throughout the process,” Zack says.
They are hoping this event will help them to qualify for
the upcoming DECA International Career Development
Conference.
“The Kick Back will be used to show judges at the state
and international levels their ability to demonstrate their
promotional knowledge and skills,” said Zalla, who’s been
advising DECA students at the school for 20 years. Zalla
is affiliated with Congregation Shaarey Zedek. Lisa Sallen,
affiliated with Temple Israel, is another DECA adviser at the
high school.
Zack and Nickon will present their advertising cam-
paign in March at the DECA State Career Development
Conference, Zalla says. More than 5,000 students from
around Michigan will attend the event. Students who win
at the state level will have an opportunity to compete at the
International Career Development Conference in Atlanta,
Ga., this April.
Both boys aim for a career in business. “Our goal is to
build a following with our first event. We hope it will lead to
a good future for the Kick Back and to hold future ventures,”
Nickon says.
Kick Back is open to the public. Sellers can purchase one
table for $60 or two tables for $100. Tickets to the event are $15
in advance or $20 at the door and may be purchased at
