Hillel Of Metro Detroit Kicks Off Israel Week Celebration
Hillel of Metro Detroit is kicking off an
Israel Week Celebration on Monday,
Oct. 16. This week-long festival will
include daily events at Wayne State
University along with parallel events
at University of Michigan-Dearborn,
Oakland University and Oakland
Community College. Organized by the
Students for Israel campus groups,
other student organizations, includ-
ing the Sociology Department, Center
for Peace and Conflict Studies and
the Cohen-Haddow Center for Judaic
Studies are partners.
While most events are for students,
the entire community is invited to
these Wayne State University events:
On Monday, Oct. 16, from 11 a.m.-
3 p.m. on Gullen Mall, enjoy Israel
Palooza — an Israel festival that will
include food, arts and music. Students
will be able to celebrate Israel and
diversity by creating an outdoor mural
with Artists 4 Israel, which advocates
for Israel and its freedoms, and a Silent
Disco headphone party will bring
together Israeli and American music.
At 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17, in
room 285 of the Student Center
Building, hear from speaker Erin
Schrode, a 25-year-old progressive,
pro-Israel activist, social entrepreneur
and leading voice on sustainability,
social impact and millennials. Schrode
is a vocal advocate for environmen-
tal action, public health and equal
justice. She ran an unprecedented
campaign in 2016 for U.S. Congress in
California. •

Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety
is a documentary created by IndieFlix
and IndieFlix Foundation to start a global
conversation and raise awareness around
anxiety, especially for youth and families.
Working with IndieFlix and
Birmingham Public Schools, Collegewise
Detroit is providing a free, public screen-
ing Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. at
Birmingham Seaholm High School.
Following the screening, Gretchen Moran
Marsh, Ph.D., will give a brief presenta-
tion addressing how anxiety affects us and
what we can do to better cope.
Dr. Jerry Bubrick, Ph.D., is senior direc-
tor of the Anxiety Disorders Center at
the Child Mind Institute and serves as an
expert in the film offering insights and
practical solutions for anxiety.
“People see anxiety as a personal
failing rather than a medical condition;
they see it as something to be ashamed
of, rather than something to be treated,”
Bubrick said. “In reality, anxiety is uni-
versal. It doesn’t discriminate — and it’s
very treatable. We just need to acknowl-
edge it and talk openly first.”
RSVP by calling (248) 203-3001 or
emailing mbaughman@birmingham.k12.
