The awakening to her own dif- ficulties occurred at a conference she attended to help one of her clients who had been diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. She began to seek professional opinions and, in 2009, received her diagnosis: Asperger syndrome/autism — a spectrum of complex brain disorders that result in social, behavioral and communication problems. In 2015, Cohen published a slim but well-received book, Six-Word Lessons on Female Asperger Syndrome. Her goal was to enable others to gain practical knowledge of life on the spectrum so they could identify and better support the disorder in their own families. The book highlights early signs for detection, coping strat- egies, diagnosis and more. An avid runner, Cohen wrote Six- Word Lessons on the Sport of Running: 100 Lessons to Enjoy Running for a Lifetime this July. Both are under Pachelli Publishing’s “Six-Word Lessons” series and can be found at amazon.com. • Canada Holocaust Memorial Omits Mention of Jews, Anti-Semitism Times of Israel Canada’s government removed a plaque at a new Holocaust memorial that omitted any reference to Jews or anti-Semitism. The National Holocaust Memorial, in the capital of Ottawa, was inau- gurated last week by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. A few days later, a lawmaker from the opposition Conservative Party criticized the “profoundly obvious omission.” “If we are going to stamp out hatred toward Jews, it is important to get his- tory right,” said MP David Sweet. Following the plaque’s removal, Heritage Minister Melanie Joly said it would be replaced with a new one “that reflects the horrors experienced by the Jewish people.” She also stressed that the memorial “commemorates the 6 million Jews as well as the 5 million other vic- tims that were murdered during the Holocaust.” The original plaque memorial- ized the “millions of men, women and children murdered during the Holocaust” and the “survivors who persevered and were able to make their way to Canada after one of the darkest chapters in history.” Although the plaque failed to men- (SCREEN CAPTURE: YOUTUBE) 2018 Audi Q3 2.0T Quattro Premium Special Lease CARTER SHERLINE/ FROG PRINCE STUDIOS XXXHMBTTNBOHFOFTJTDPN A Farmington Hills woman who has fought her own largely unknown dis- ability and is helping others along the way has received a major award from the Ted Lindsay Foundation. The Ted Lindsay/ Sergei Fedorov Individual Courage Award was present- ed to Tracey Cohen of Farmington Hills at a dinner held recently by the Troy- based foundation Tracey Cohen that supports autism research and educa- tional programs. Until her disorder was diagnosed at age 39, Cohen was uncertain why she was “different” from others. As a child, the daughter of George and Joan Cohen excelled academically, but social situations were challeng- ing. She managed to graduate from the University of Michigan in 1994 and began a career in early child- hood education.
