Ask Dr. Vieder
Is it true that having a dog in the house can help boost everyone’s immune system?
There is plenty of evidence to suggest that “man’s best friend” - the family dog, has several benefi cial health effects for human beings including
the potential to boost the immune system. It is postulated that dogs can actually act like a probiotic, helping us to develop bacterial colonies, which
in turn augments the activity of our immune systems.
What are the other health benefi ts of having a dog?
In addition to the potential for improving your immune system, there are numerous other secondary health benefi ts to having a four-legged
companion. With the commitment to walking a dog on a daily basis, you and your family stay fi t and active. There’s the social benefi t of meeting
other dog owners. Having the companionship and unconditional love of a dog can add signifi cant meaning and purpose for individuals that are
now empty nesters. Having a dog can even help prevent the onset of depression. There are also many studies that have proven that owning a
dog can also help reduce hypertension. For those with special needs, there are now many different breeds being trained as service dogs to assist
individuals with a variety of more specifi c physical and mental challenges.
I sometimes let my dog give me a lick. But I just read that it might not be such a great idea.
Is a lick of affection OK, or should I avoid it altogether?
What dog owner doesn’t love that energetic, enthusiastic greeting when coming home from a long stressful day, topped off
with a wet tongue kiss? Contrary popular belief, the bacterial counts in our pet’s mouth is actually worse than the human
mouth. More importantly, the type of bacteria that dogs carry is signifi cantly different than the bacteria that typically reside
inside and on our bodies. There are a whole host of diseases which can be carried by animals. These are known as zoonotic
diseases. In general, there is a low likelihood of transmission of zoonosis, and an occasional single lick is not likely to cause
signifi cant harm. However, the best medical wisdom and recommendation is to avoid those wet sloppy kisses from Fido
especially on your face, which carries the greatest area of transmission risk. Having a family dog has many positive health
benefi ts, but limit or eliminate those wet kisses!
