Last Thursday they moved to an apartment in the Condado area right on the beach, just as predictions of powerful Hurricane Irma became very real. As the storm hit, they watched both a traffic light and tree fall, and a trans- former blow up. The waves were as much as 25 feet high and reached all the way up to their building, later receding, leaving a smooth, clean beach. “Our apartment is in a sturdy, reinforced concrete building and our apartment is on the fourth floor. We’re very lucky compared to a lot of people,” Lynn says. Their power had gone out, but because the power grid in Purerto Rico is fragile even in good weather, their building has a generator that is providing them with limited power through a single electrical outlet.
